Dr. Laura Patterson Rosa received her veterinary doctor (M.V. – Medico Veterinario) degree in 2015, from the Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil. During veterinary school, she participated in the 2013 Veterinary Investigator Program, conducting research on Equine Genetics at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. After a brief period as equine veterinarian in Brazil, she started her Ph.D. in Equine Genomics at the University of Florida, focusing on usage of “omics” tools in equine health and preventative medicine. Her dissertation was titled “Leveraging ‘Omics’ to Unravel Complex Health Conditions in the Horse”. Upon completing her Ph.D., Dr. Patterson joined the University of Florida’s Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, where she discovered genetic variants associated with coloration, social interaction and behavior in defensive or “africanized” honey bees. She also assisted on the development of a screening test for genetic type in honey bees targeting invasive lineages in the US. After the postdoctoral experience, she became a Genetics Scientist for Etalon Diagnostics, further developing the genetic testing panels and conducting research in health and traits of interest. In 2022, she accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Genetics, Reproduction, Equine Industry and Equine Physiology, as well as conducted research in health parameter variation and health reestablishment in emaciated rescued horses.
She is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the Equine Sciences Society, and the Dorothy Russell Havemeyer International Horse Genome Workshop. She also actively serves as Scientific Editor for PLOSOne. As faculty at Long Island University - College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Patterson is excited to mentor veterinary students and share her knowledge in Equine Medicine and Genomics. Her research focuses on using omics tools to further understand complex diseases, locomotion, population structure, adaptation and improve health and selection in equids (and sometimes other species!).
Dr. Patterson enjoys horse-related activities, as she has been a trainer and show jumper for over two decades.
