Dr. Marcela Moncada is an Assistant Professor of Veterinary Pharmacology at Long Island University, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Moncada was born and raised in Chile. She obtained her DVM degree from the Catholic University of Temuco in Chile and worked as a small animal practitioner. After this clinical experience, Dr. Moncada moved to Germany where she obtained a PhD degree from the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. Dr. Moncada’s PhD research studies focused on the function and localization of the membrane carrier SLC10A4 in different mammalian cell lines.
Dr. Moncada’s research interests at Long Island University are centered around the role of membrane carrier proteins and their implications in drug disposition in animals, pharmacogenetics, as well as animal models of disease. Dr. Moncada has presented at several international conferences such as the VetPharm Symposia in Europe.
At Long Island University, Dr. Moncada is coordinator and instructor of the courses Introduction to Pharmacology (DVM-611), Veterinary Pharmacology (DVM-623), and Integration II (DVM-526). Dr. Moncada is certified in medical education by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), University of Dundee, UK.
