Dr. Jerry Roberson is a Full Professor and Department Head of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1986 from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a one-year internship in food animal medicine and surgery at Iowa State University in 1987, Dr. Roberson completed a food animal medicine and surgery residency and then his PhD in Veterinary Science at Washington State University in 1993. His PhD thesis was “The epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus intramammary infections in prepartum dairy heifers. His primary research interests are clinical mastitis treatment efficacy studies and small ruminant management and practices. Upon completing his residency and PhD, Dr. Roberson worked at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine where he spent his time providing food animal ambulatory service, teaching food animal medicine and surgery and conducting research on clinical mastitis treatment efficacy, 1994-2000. He was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award for the Class of 1999 and Teacher of the Year Award for the Class of 2001.
Dr. Roberson’s further professional positions include Associate Professor of Agricultural Practices at Kansas State University where he continued mastitis related research and provided in-house food animal medicine and surgery services (2001-2004). Dr. Roberson then took a position in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, University of Tennessee CVM, where he provided in-house and food animal medicine and surgery service as well as other teaching duties (2004-2012). While at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Roberson completed his board certification in large animal internal medicine. He was the recipient of the SCAVMA Outstanding Educator in Clinical Sciences in 1998 and the Carl J. Norden: Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award in 2011. In 2013, Dr. Roberson accepted a position at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine where he taught food animal medicine and surgery, theriogenology and nutrition courses as well as several food animal laboratories. During this time, he began conducting surveys on management practices of small ruminant farmers on the island of St. Kitts. In November 2015, he took an opportunity to develop the food animal program at a newly developed veterinary school (Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine, LMU-CVM).
Dr. Roberson participates in multiple professional organizations. He currently serves on the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine’s Forum – Food Animal Subcommittee and is the General Exam Review Committee chair. He currently serves on the American Dairy Science Association’s Small Ruminant Program Committee. He enjoys membership in the American Association of Bovine Practitioners where he was nominated for AABP advisor of the year in 2016 and 2018 and is proud of the LMU-CVM food animal club for receiving student chapter of the year in 2018. Dr. Roberson is a member of the Cherokee Nation and received the American Indian Science and Engineering Society “Professional of the Year” honors in 2011.
