Our Mission Statement

The Writing Center works to build community around writing, teaching, and learning because we believe:

  • Writing is a powerful tool, not only for communicating existing ideas but also for discovering new ones
  • All writing takes place within sociocultural and interpersonal contexts
  • Learning to write is a life-long pursuit
  • All writers benefit from attentive and attuned feedback on works-in-progress

We believe that all writers should have access to as many language tools as possible, and that all writers benefit from a critical consciousness of the ways that systems of power affect individual choices in writing and in responses to writing.

We aim to help all writers develop a sense of agency, along with the linguistic tools needed to accomplish their writing goals, by listening carefully to writers, giving their ideas attention and respect, and tailoring our approaches to support diverse learning styles, goals, and contexts.

The Writing Center is committed to creating an inclusive environment that prioritizes justice and equity.
