The School of Performing Arts provides a number of noteworthy resources to support its programs in art, media arts, music, theatre, film and dance. Our facilities bring together dynamic faculty and committed students in a vibrant learning environment that fosters and supports creativity and growth. LIU Post offers exquisite performance and exhibition space, state-of-the-art digital laboratories and broadcasting studios. Many of our venues are open to the public and showcase the talents of our students and professors to the greater community. Facilities are located in both historic and contemporary buildings. Below is a summary of various facilities within the School of Visual and Performing Arts.
The 2,200 seat Tilles Center for the Performing Arts provides LIU Post students and the public with an internationally recognized performance venue, featuring some of the most important classical and popular artists of our time. Students have access to employment and experiential learning opportunities, both on stage and behind the curtain.
Little Theatre MainstageThe Little Theatre Mainstage was built as a proscenium house, but now doubles as a black box space that incorporates elements such as rotating sets, trapdoors, and occasionally, rotating audiences. The space is modeled after Off-Broadway houses and features similar technical capabilities and equipment. There are usually three mainstage productions each year.
Rifle Range TheatreThe Rifle Range Theatre can best be described as a quintessential “Off-Off-Broadway” theatre. The Rifle Range hosts everything from student-written and produced work to thesis projects, small plays, improv shows and film shoots. The theatre has its own sound and lighting system and is modeled on professional theatre spaces. It offers our students firsthand experience in producing shows in a black box space before they enter the professional world.
Hillwood CinemaCampus movies, run by the Association for Campus Programming (ACP), are held weekly during the school semester in the Hillwood Cinema. In addition, movies are shown on PTV – Channel 73 during weeknights and all day on weekends.
Dance majors develop their craft by performing and studying in several spaces on campus from the state-of-the-art stage at Tilles Center to the more intimate concert space at the Little Theatre, both with excellent lighting and sound capabilities. The studio in the Theatre, Dance and Arts Management building is for the exclusive use of the dance program, and has a sound system, barres and mirrors, and video capabilities and serves the dual purpose of a rehearsal space and an informal performance venue. Many classes have live accompaniment. Dancers have access to a full costume shop.
