Disability Support Services (DSS)

Disability Support Services The office of Disability Support Services at LIU Post collaborates with students with disabilities to ensure equal access to all programs, services, and facilities on the LIU Post campus as well as LIU's regional campuses.

Disability Support Services works with the students with disabilities and the LIU community to create an accessible and supportive environment. Based on appropriate documentation, DSS assists students in securing the necessary accommodations from academic departments and, if needed, other offices.

Policy for Students with Disabilities

In compliance with federal and state laws, LIU Post is committed to providing qualified individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in all University programs and activities, curricular and co-curricular, which are available to non-disabled individuals.

Students with disabilities who desire accommodations must submit appropriate documentation of their disability to the office of Disability Support Services located in the Learning Support Center. Professional staff will review and evaluate this documentation, interview the student, and provide the student with completed Accommodations Forms for presentation to the teaching faculty. Accommodations Forms must be obtained each semester, before the semester begins. DSS files are confidential.


Academic accommodations are provided to students with disabilities by their individual professors within the academic departments. Accommodations will be considered reasonable when they do not fundamentally alter the nature of a program, course, or service or present an undue administrative burden on the University. Students requesting accommodations are required to submit documentation to verify eligibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Appropriate medical documentation of the disability must be provided so that DSS can:

  1. Determine the student's eligibility for accommodation; and
  2. If the student is eligible, evaluate appropriate academic accommodations.

Disability documentation must include a written evaluation from a physician, psychologist, or other qualified specialist that establishes the nature and extent of the disability and includes the basis for the diagnosis and the dates of testing. The documentation must establish the current need for an accommodation.

Determining Eligibility

Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the needs of the student, and the course standards. The determination of an appropriate and reasonable accommodation is based on approved documentation and through interaction with the student. Specifically, accommodations are determined by DSS in consultation with the student and with input, as needed, from the faculty and staff.

In reviewing the specific accommodation requested by the student or recommended by the physician/evaluator, DSS may find that while a recommendation is clinically supported, it is not the most appropriate accommodation given the requirements of a particular student's academic program. In addition, DSS may propose clinically supported accommodations that would be appropriate and useful for the student, but which neither the student nor the evaluator have requested. Campus departments will be notified, as necessary, of the need for additional accommodations noted in the student's documentation.

Denial of Accommodations

The University reserves the right to deny services or accommodations in the event the request is not clinically supported. If the documentation provided by a student does not support the existence of a disability or the need for a requested accommodation, the student will be so advised. Students will be given the opportunity to supplement the initial documentation with further information from a physician, psychologist, or other specialist.

The University is not required to provide an accommodation that compromises the essential requirements of a course or program, or that poses a direct threat to the health or safety of the student or others.

Student Appeal

A student who disagrees with a DSS determination of eligibility or accommodation is encouraged to meet with the director of the Learning Support Center to resolve the matter informally. Students may appeal the denial of the DSS determination to the Associate Provost for Student Success.

Procedures for Students With Disabilities Who Desire Accommodations
  1. Documentation
    A student with a disability who desires accommodations must submit appropriate documentation of his or her disability to the DSS office. In most cases, appropriate documentation should be no older than 3 years, must include a diagnosis of a disability, must include the testing and results that explain the nature of the disability, the way it currently impacts the student academically or otherwise, and suggestions of accommodations that might work for the student.

  2. Evaluation of Documentation
    Appropriate professional staff in the DSS office will review and evaluate the disability documentation that a student submits. Confidential files will be established for documented students with disabilities.

  3. Notification
    The DSS office will notify the campus departments of special accommodations needed. Appropriate professional staff will also meet with the student and provide the student with the appropriate Accommodations Forms for the student to present to his/her professors.

  4. Accommodations
    Each academic department will provide the academic accommodations needed by the student. These academic accommodations may include but are not limited to extended time for tests, note takers, use of a tape recorder in class, reading exam questions to a student, a scribe to record a student's answers to test questions, and the use of a computer for an essay exam. Other campus departments will be responsible for making accommodations as necessary.

  5. Publicity of the Policy and Procedures
    The policy and procedures for students with disabilities will be publicized in the following ways:
    • LIU Post publications such as the Student Handbook, Handbook for Students with Disabilities and the graduate and undergraduate catalogues and bulletins will include the policy and procedures for students with disabilities.
    • Letters explaining the policy and procedures will be sent to all incoming students in the admission acceptance packets.
    • A campus mailing to all teaching faculty and staff will explain the policy and procedures.
    • Special information meetings will be held with the offices that often interact with students with disabilities such as Admissions Counselors and Academic Counselors/Advisors.
    • All faculty will be provided with a statement to read in class on the first day of classes that provides students with information about how to request accommodations.
