Interprofessional Education

In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined Interprofessional Education (IPE) as "Interprofessional education that occurs when students from two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes”. The goals of IPE are for students to learn how to function in an interprofessional (IP) team and carry learned knowledge, skills, and values into their future practice; to provide IP patient-centered care as part of a collaborative team; and to focus on improving patient outcomes. An IP team is composed of members from different healthcare professions (including, but not limited to pharmacists, physicians, nursing, nurse practitioners, dietitians, etc.) who have specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, and expertise.

An IP learning experience prepares health professions students to work together with a common goal of providing safer and better patient-centered care. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) requires, as an accreditation standard for all colleges of pharmacy, all PharmD students participate in IPE programs in order "to provide entry-level, patient-centered care in a variety of practice settings as a contributing member of an IP team. In the aggregate, team exposure includes prescribers as well as other healthcare professionals.”

Vision

Provide student pharmacists with interprofessional learning opportunities that will support acquisition of core competencies required for development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to actively participate in collaborative interprofessional teams.

Mission

Develop pharmacists who will work collaboratively, efficiently, and respectfully in the interprofessional healthcare environments to provide patient-centered care and improve public health.

What IPE programs are presently offered at the LIU Pharmacy College?

The LIU College of Pharmacy has instituted several initiatives to ensure that all pharmacy students engage in IPE activities so that each and every graduate is provided with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively collaborate with various healthcare professionals to provide optimum patient-centered care. A variety of IPE programs are offered to our PharmD students throughout the calendar year.  These IPE activities range from small simulation exercises involving a few health profession students/healthcare practitioners to large scale programs. Some examples of the IPE events at the LIU College of Pharmacy include:

  • Small SIM Lab simulation activities which focus on long-term conditions involving a few students/healthcare professionals.
  • Large scale virtual game-based IPE simulations. These simulations consist of groups comprised of students/healthcare professionals comprising as many as ten different and discrete health professions.

Example of IPE Activity:

For the third year, LIU Pharmacy students participated in the Teaching Oral-Systemic Health program (TOSH) that took place at the New York Simulation Center for Health Sciences (NYSIM) on September 3-5, 2019. The program consisted of a clinical simulation and case study experience that brought together total of 780 students from Long Island University (LIU) Pharmacy and medical, dental, nurse practitioner, and midwifery students from NYU School of Medicine, NYU College of Dentistry, and NYU School of Nursing respectively. Students collaborated to learn the head, ears, eyes, nose, oral, throat (HEENOT) oral exam and developed an interprofessional management plan for a diabetic patient with oral health problems. At the end of the activity, students together with the faculty members debriefed the entire simulation experience and reflected on their own extraprofessional experiences in the video link below:
