Short Biography
Dr. Novatt is a biochemist who is passionate about science and science education.
She was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute pre-doctoral fellow at the Rockefeller University, where she worked with Dr. Michael Rout to study how proteins move in and out of the nucleus of cells. After receiving her Ph.D. in 2009, she moved to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory where sthe studied the basic mechamisms of RNA splicing and its connection to human disease with Dr. Adrian Krainer. There, she received a postdoctoral training fellowship from the National Cancer Institute.
Since 2008, Dr. Novatt has taught chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, and human biology as an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities throughout the NY metro area.
She came to LIU in January 2017 with the goal of increasing our pharmacy students’ exposure to research. To this end, she has developed a research APPE and two research-based electives – “Introduction to Research” and “From Petri Dish to Pharmacy.”
In addition to science, Dr. Novatt has a background in theater and improv. She loves working with students to improve their communication skills using improv-based activities.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Developing, implementing, and evaluating novel approaches to teach biomedical science, research methods, and communication skills.
