Founded in 1965 as Friends World College, LIU Global is rooted in Quaker humanism and experiential education. The program was designed to address global challenges through direct, hands-on learning rather than traditional classroom study. It emphasizes global awareness, problem-solving, and cultural immersion.
History
Dr. Morris Mitchell, a Quaker educator, developed the College’s distinctive approach, which involved world travel and field study as a core element of the curriculum. The program expanded with regional centers, offering students the opportunity to engage directly with urgent global issues. After affiliating with Long Island University (LIU) in 1991, the College gained full accreditation and adopted the name LIU Global in 2007.Global Curriculum
Today, LIU Global offers a degree in Global Studies, aligned with Mitchell's vision of "World Education." Students spend seven semesters traveling across Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Their studies include field research, internships, and seminars that address interconnected cultural, political, economic, and ecological systems. The program culminates in a senior thesis completed in New York City.
Accreditation
