SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Events and Programs

The Center on Community Inclusion at the LIU Post is dedicated to providing resources to school districts, service providers and families so that individuals with disabilities will meet with success in inclusive environments. CCI hosts a variety of events and programs throughout the year which are designed to enrich our community, our families, and our educators. We bring together some of the brightest and most accomplished experts in the field of special needs education and support through a variety of programs including: intensive autism training for professionals in the special needs field, programs that build family bonds and communication, and workshops that build independence, confidence and skills in individuals with special needs.

I Can Bike

LIU Post is a participating school in I Can Bike, a national organization that uses adaptive equipment, trained professionals and volunteers. With 75 minutes of instruction each day for five days, approximately 85 percent of participants learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently. Within days of learning to ride, many children exhibit independent behaviors for the first time ever, which helps them gain assurance and self-reliance in many other aspects of their lives.

Each participant with a disability and his/her typical peer is paired with a graduate student enrolled in LIU Post’s Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Psychology, or Speech-Language programs.

To be eligible to enroll, participants must be at least eight years old. They must have a disability but be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane and be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Participants should have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 250 pounds.

The fee for the camp is $200. Some scholarships are available. Please select the "Events" tab on the left-hand navigation bar to see when we are hosting the next I Can Bike camp. Contact cci@cwpost.liu.edu for more information.
