The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Integral to competent practice is the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of our MSW program are prepared to engage in practice that is informed by a diverse body of theories and knowledge, social work values, and professional social work skills.
The LIU MSW Program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), signifying that it meets the highest standards of academic excellence. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at LIU Brooklyn is a collaboration with the LIU Post campus in Brookville, New York.
Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.
The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psycho-social assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. Students select a specific area of concentration for specialized education in a particular area of practice. Field experience in the second year provides an opportunity for the student to apply in practice specialized knowledge, values and skills gained through their selected concentration.
The program seeks students from diverse backgrounds who reflect the diversity of the populations its graduates will serve, locally, regionally, and globally. Students who apply to this program should be interested in working through direct care or leadership roles with diverse populations including children, families, the elderly, immigrants and refugees, persons with physical and/or mental conditions, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, and the economically disadvantaged.

Only candidates who have earned an undergraduate degree are admitted to the master of social work degree program.
Consistent with the policies of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the Long Island University MSW Program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience under any circumstance.
Advanced Standing
The Advanced Standing Program provides students who earned an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE accredited baccalaureate program, up to one full year of credit towards their MSW. The standard for acceptance under advanced standing is a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances will be made on an individual basis, and may require supportive materials. Eligible students must specifically apply for advanced standing and each case is reviewed individually. Please note that holding an undergraduate degree in social work from an accredited program does not automatically grant a student advanced standing. Additionally, only foundation level social work courses where the student has received a "B" or better will be accepted for credit towards the MSW in the advanced standing program.
All LIU MSW advanced standing students must complete an additional course which serves as a bridge from baccalaureate to graduate study. The course, SWK 614, entitled Advanced Principles of Administrative and Clinical Practice within an Interdisciplinary Context, includes advanced clinical content in individual and family systems of practice and also an introduction to role theory and its application in organizational and community systems of practice. SWK 614 ensures that students who are eligible for advanced status will have the same orientation as students who have completed the foundation year of our graduate program.

The MSW program at LIU Brooklyn is designed to meet the individualized needs of our students. Understanding that most of our students have multiple commitments, often including full-time employment, we provide a convenient and flexible course schedule, with choices for evening weekday and/or Saturday schedules. To increase flexibility, our students can complete the LIU Brooklyn MSW program through plans of study for two (2), three (3), or four (4) years.
We offer a Part-Time “Spring Start” in our MSW Program
LIU Brooklyn offers a “Spring Start” program. MSW programs traditionally begin in the Fall semester, but we are often asked whether students can start in the Spring semester. Our answer is, YES!
Students can take 2 classes in the Spring semester, and then take 2 classes in the following Summer (May-July). Classes will be offered on weekday evenings and/or weekends, depending on demand. After successfully completing these four (4) courses, students will continue on in the program with their fall cohort peers.
After completing the foundation curriculum, the MSW program provides the opportunity for advanced year MSW students to choose one of five outstanding concentration areas:

Field education is the signature pedagogy of Social Work Education. Field Education is an integral component of the curriculum of any social work program. Experiences in the field engage the student in supervised social work practice and provide opportunities to apply classroom learning in the field setting.
In the first year of field placement, LIU Brooklyn MSW students are required to complete a minimum of 200 hours in their internship during each of the standard Fall and Spring semesters, for a total of 400 hours in the generalist practice year. During the second year of field, also referred to as the specialized practice experience, students are required to complete a total of 300 hours during each of the standard Fall and Spring semesters, for a total of 600 hours in the specialization year. Thus, the minimum number of field hours required of LIU MSW students is 1,000 hours.

International students must submit an international evaluation and translation for all international transcripts to SocialWorkCAS. These transcripts must be evaluated by NACES accredited organization and must be submitted by the application deadline. Students must alert the Social Work department of such transcripts by emailing Social Work Department Chairperson (see left side of this page).

This form is used to assist the COA in the evaluation of the program’s compliance with Accreditation Standards stated below.
4.0.2 The program provides its most recent year of summary data and outcomes for the assessment of each of the identified competencies, specifying the percentage of students achieving program benchmarks for each program option.
4.0.3 The program uses Form AS 4(B) and/or Form AS 4(M) to report its most recent assessment outcomes for each program option to constituents and the public on its website and routinely up-dates (minimally every 2 years) its findings.
All Council on Social Work Education programs measure and report student learning outcomes. Students are assessed on their mastery of the competencies which comprise the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education. These competencies are dimensions of social work practice which all social workers are expected to master during their professional training. A measurement benchmark is set by the social work programs for each competency. An assessment score at or above that benchmark is considered by the program to represent mastery of that particular competency.
