Master of Social Work (MSW)
The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Integral to competent practice is the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of our MSW program are prepared to engage in practice that is informed by a diverse body of theories and knowledge, social work values, and professional social work skills.
The LIU MSW Program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), signifying that it meets the highest standards of academic excellence. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at LIU Brooklyn is a collaboration with the LIU Post campus in Brookville, New York.
Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.
The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psycho-social assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. Students select a specific area of concentration for specialized education in a particular area of practice. Field experience in the second year provides an opportunity for the student to apply in practice specialized knowledge, values and skills gained through their selected concentration.
Admissions
The program seeks students from diverse backgrounds who reflect the diversity of the populations its graduates will serve, locally, regionally, and globally. Students who apply to this program should be interested in working through direct care or leadership roles with diverse populations including children, families, the elderly, immigrants and refugees, persons with physical and/or mental conditions, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, and the economically disadvantaged.

Only candidates who have earned an undergraduate degree are admitted to the master of social work degree program.
Consistent with the policies of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the Long Island University MSW Program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience under any circumstance.
Advanced Standing
The Advanced Standing Program provides students who earned an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE accredited baccalaureate program, up to one full year of credit towards their MSW. The standard for acceptance under advanced standing is a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances will be made on an individual basis, and may require supportive materials. Eligible students must specifically apply for advanced standing and each case is reviewed individually. Please note that holding an undergraduate degree in social work from an accredited program does not automatically grant a student advanced standing. Additionally, only foundation level social work courses where the student has received a "B" or better will be accepted for credit towards the MSW in the advanced standing program.
All LIU MSW advanced standing students must complete an additional course which serves as a bridge from baccalaureate to graduate study. The course, SWK 614, entitled Advanced Principles of Administrative and Clinical Practice within an Interdisciplinary Context, includes advanced clinical content in individual and family systems of practice and also an introduction to role theory and its application in organizational and community systems of practice. SWK 614 ensures that students who are eligible for advanced status will have the same orientation as students who have completed the foundation year of our graduate program.
How to Apply
Requirements for Admission to the MSW Program
- Application for Admission
- Application fee: $50 (non-refundable)
- Official copies of your undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts from any college(s) or universities you have attended. Unofficial, student copies may be submitted initially.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.0, although candidates with lower GPA’s may be considered based on overall criteria and may be offered admissions with limited matriculation on a probationary status.
- International students are also required to achieve a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79 Internet-based; IELTS of 6.5 or above is also acceptable.
- International students are also required to submit a course by course credential evaluation completed by a member of NACES. Visit www.naces.org for a list of approved evaluators.
- The program reserves the right to interview applicants.
Students who are interested in the MSW program must either apply for:
- Regular program admission (60 credit program), or
- Advanced Standing (33 credit program reserved for graduates from accredited undergraduate social work programs).

Program Requirements
Continued enrollment in this program is contingent upon:
- Earning a grade of B or better in all field education courses
- Maintaining a minimum grade-point average of 3.0
- Being in compliance with all program and CSWE standards including Education Policy 2.1.1 which requires that students "Identify as a professional social worker and conduct oneself accordingly."
- Earning the required 60 credits within a five-year period
Plans of Study
The MSW program at LIU Brooklyn is designed to meet the individualized needs of our students. Understanding that most of our students have multiple commitments, often including full-time employment, we provide a convenient and flexible course schedule, with choices for evening weekday and/or Saturday schedules. To increase flexibility, our students can complete the LIU Brooklyn MSW program through plans of study for two (2), three (3), or four (4) years.
We offer a Part-Time “Spring Start” in our MSW Program
LIU Brooklyn offers a “Spring Start” program. MSW programs traditionally begin in the Fall semester, but we are often asked whether students can start in the Spring semester. Our answer is, YES!
Students can take 2 classes in the Spring semester, and then take 2 classes in the following Summer (May-July). Classes will be offered on weekday evenings and/or weekends, depending on demand. After successfully completing these four (4) courses, students will continue on in the program with their fall cohort peers.
Advanced Year Concentrations
After completing the foundation curriculum, the MSW program provides the opportunity for advanced year MSW students to choose one of five outstanding concentration areas:
- Child & Family Welfare
- The Child and Family Welfare concentration prepares students interested in working in an interdisciplinary context with children and their families.
- This concentration incorporates knowledge, values, and skills that professionals need to effectively work with children and their families across a broad range of social issues and in multiple programs.
- After completing the foundation year MSW coursework, students in the second (specialized/concentration) year then develop their understanding about policies and services specific to children and families, family violence across the lifespan, community based practice with children and families and childhood psychopathology.
- Forensic Social Work
- The forensic social work concentration prepares students to apply the principles of social work to the legal system, including applicable local, state and federal laws; civil and criminal courts and the juvenile justice system; law enforcement agencies; and correctional facilities.
- Your clients may be children or adults, individuals or families, organizations or communities. Their legal difficulties may involve child custody and parental rights issues due to domestic violence and neglect and crimes relating to mental illness and substance abuse. They may face arrest and incarceration, be imprisoned or hospitalized, or be on probation or parole.
- The Forensic Social Work concentration prepares students to serve all of these populations, by identifying societal issues and their impact on your clients; screening, assessing and counseling your clients; planning and implementing interventions; making client referrals; and otherwise serving as effective advocates for diverse and at-risk clients.
- Upon completion of the MSW degree with a concentration in forensic social work, graduates may also qualify for an Advanced Certificate in Forensic Social Work by taking just one additional course, which is offered by Long Island University.
- Substance Use and Addictive Behaviors

- The LIU MSW Program offers students the opportunity to simultaneously meet the partial requirements towards the New York State Certificate in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling (CASAC) while earning their MSW degree.
- The Substance Use and Addictive Behaviors concentration satisfies all of the educational requirements for the CASAC credential and issues its own Education and Training Provider Certificate.
- In addition, the MSW Degree contributes significantly (4000 hours) toward satisfying the 6000 hour work experience requirement for the CASAC certificate.
- The LIU MSW Program offers students the opportunity to simultaneously meet the partial requirements towards the New York State Certificate in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling (CASAC) while earning their MSW degree.

Field Education
Field education is the signature pedagogy of Social Work Education. Field Education is an integral component of the curriculum of any social work program. Experiences in the field engage the student in supervised social work practice and provide opportunities to apply classroom learning in the field setting.
In the first year of field placement, LIU Brooklyn MSW students are required to complete a minimum of 200 hours in their internship during each of the standard Fall and Spring semesters, for a total of 400 hours in the generalist practice year. During the second year of field, also referred to as the specialized practice experience, students are required to complete a total of 300 hours during each of the standard Fall and Spring semesters, for a total of 600 hours in the specialization year. Thus, the minimum number of field hours required of LIU MSW students is 1,000 hours.

International Applicants
If required, applicants with foreign education must send TOEFL scores directly to Long Island University (Brooklyn Campus). LIU Brooklyn ETS reporting code is 2070.
International students must submit an international evaluation and translation for all international transcripts to SocialWorkCAS. These transcripts must be evaluated by NACES accredited organization and must be submitted by the application deadline. Students must alert the Social Work department of such transcripts by emailing Social Work Department Chairperson (see left side of this page).

This form is used to assist the COA in the evaluation of the program’s compliance with Accreditation Standards stated below.
4.0.2 The program provides its most recent year of summary data and outcomes for the assessment of each of the identified competencies, specifying the percentage of students achieving program benchmarks for each program option.
4.0.3 The program uses Form AS 4(B) and/or Form AS 4(M) to report its most recent assessment outcomes for each program option to constituents and the public on its website and routinely up-dates (minimally every 2 years) its findings.
All Council on Social Work Education programs measure and report student learning outcomes. Students are assessed on their mastery of the competencies which comprise the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education. These competencies are dimensions of social work practice which all social workers are expected to master during their professional training. A measurement benchmark is set by the social work programs for each competency. An assessment score at or above that benchmark is considered by the program to represent mastery of that particular competency.
