Q&A

How did you get your start in the music industry? at Roc Nation?

I started early on doing street promotion for Roc-A-Fella. I interned and spent an equal amount of time in the office as well as the streets / road. I wanted to experience both sides. That then turned into an A&R position and Roc-A-Fella soon evolved into Roc Nation.

What is a typical day like for you?

A typical for me is filled with multiple Calls, Texts, emails and meetings. Anything from Studio visits & video sets to Showcases and Music seminars. I split my time between the office and being on the go. Visiting clients and fulfilling their needs, wants & goals.

What has been your favorite part of your career?

My favorite part of my career has been being a small contributor to massive Songs, Albums and careers. And over all being able to work on projects that help shift the culture.

Best advice you ever received?

Common misconception about the music industry?

Common misconception about the music business is that it’s all fun and games. People only see the flashing lights and the lifestyle. They only see the finished product. They don’t get to witness the long hours, stressful, intense moments. There’s so much that goes into an album, a video, a concert, a tour, a project or a marketing roll out. No one sees that part.

How has the music industry changed over the years and what do students need to know to adapt to the future of the industry?

The music industry has changed for the better in my opinion. Artist have the upper hand and all the leverage. They’re creating a demand for themselves like never before. Their business is in order from releasing music, to touring and selling merch. Labels used to pick what artist they wanted to sign. Now artist pick what label they wanna sign to. Gotta love it.

What tips do you have for students wanting to be in the music industry?

Make sure you know exactly what you wanna do or at least have an idea. Set short and long term goals. Have patience and determination. Please take initiative and step up. Don’t overthink things. Be proactive. Make sure your team is solid and everyone brings something to the table
