LIU Brooklyn Honors College encourages students to take advantage of opportunities that will enrich their academic and professional lives. An important component of an education is participating in unique and distinctive experiences that extend skills learned in the classroom. The activities and organizations described below provide a snapshot of the many diverse extracurricular activities that Honors students have available to them, including opportunities to present work at regional and national undergraduate conferences, to participate in nationally recognized honors societies, and to apply for competitive fellowships. Financial support is available for students to participate in conferences.
Alpha Lambda Delta
This national freshman honor society is open to students in all majors who have completed their freshman year with a 3.5 overall GPA, among other criteria. The Brooklyn Campus Chapter is an active club and hosts many activities for its members. Campus Advisors: Melissa Antinori
Alpha Chi
A nationally recognized honor society dedicated to scholastic excellence and leadership for juniors and seniors of all majors. The Brooklyn Campus Sigma chapter represents juniors and seniors with GPA’s in the top 10% of their class. Campus Advisor: James Clarke
Fulbright Scholarships
The Fulbright Student Programs are U.S. Department of State sponsored scholarships for students to engage in research, study, and English Language teaching opportunities abroad. Fulbright has programs in over 150 countries worldwide and is a competitive national scholarship. Campus Advisor: James Clarke
Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship
Students majoring in the Liberal Arts and Sciences can compete for this prestigious fellowship which provides three summers of paid internships in at least two of three sectors: nonprofit organizations, government service and private enterprise. Campus representative: James Clarke
Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress
The Brooklyn Campus is pleased to be a part of this unique non-resident program that offers select undergraduate students from leading colleges and universities a year-long opportunity to study the U.S. Presidency. The Center’s goal is to develop a new generation of national leaders committed to public service.
National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)
The nation’s largest and most prestigious venue for undergraduate research. The annual conference features as many as 2000 undergraduate presentations representing all disciplines and hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide.
National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC)
The nation’s professional association of undergraduate Honors programs and colleges. NCHC’s annual national conference, held each fall semester, provides students opportunities to meet Honors students and faculty from around the nation, to present their own research, and to attend sessions exploring the goals of Honors education.
Northeast Region Honors Council (NRHC)
The regional association of Honors programs and colleges in the Northeast. Our region stretches from Maine to Maryland. The annual regional conference is held in the spring.
