Online Bilingual Extension Programs

The LIU Online Bilingual Extension Programs are a Cross-Campus initiative through the Brooklyn and Hudson campuses. These New York state approved programs are designed, implemented, and administered by full-time faculty at both campuses.

The Online Bilingual Extension Programs are intended for:

  1. Certified teachers ONLY (NOT counselors, school psychologists, speech and language pathologists or social workers.)
  2. Bilingual Individuals ONLY-proficiency in a language other than English and English as measured by the New York State administered Bilingual Education Assessment that tests reading, writing, speaking and listening in a language other than English.
The Online Bilingual Extension Programs in General and Special Education consist of five 3-credit courses covering the following content:

Assessment of ELLs in Special Education

To determine whether or not the ONLINE programs are appropriate for you, you must answer YES to the following:

  1. You are a self-motivated learner who can keep up with readings & assignments.
  2. You have sufficient computer skills (e.g., advanced word-processing, PowerPoint, discussion forums, videoconferencing, etc.)
  3. You have updated computer equipment at home including high-speed internet access, webcam, and headset.

Tuition Support and Costs

Tuition support is available only for ELIGIBLE teachers working with Bilingual Special Education populations. The BSE programs are administered out of our Hudson campus. Information on tuition support is available from the NYSED Intensive Teacher Institute (ITI) or call 631-244-4016

Per credit cost information is available at Student Financial Services.  Be sure to check so you are aware of the costs before proceeding. 

A special tuition reduction may be available to online extension students.  Please fill out the questionnaire below and contact the program coordinator for more information on this.


  • ITI funding covers ONE 3-credit course per semester. You must take courses in consecutive semesters, including summers. You will be given a course sequence which must be followed.
  • NYCDOE scholarship recipients, such as NYC Teaching Fellows or Teachers of Tomorrow, are not eligible to receive New York State ITI funding.
  • If you are not eligible for ITI funding and you still want to take the program, you are most welcome to do so at full cost. Financial aid is available for students taking a minimum of 6 credits per semester.
