Description


Dr. Barnes is a dynamic and compassionate Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner dedicated to ending racial and ethnic health disparities.  She has spent her entire nursing career servicing underserved and minority communities.  She received the Sojourner Truth Award in 2015 for her leadership and clinical work that aligns with the lifelong legacy, mission, and vision of the late Sojourner Truth.  Dr. Barnes has a passion for working with adolescents and young adults as she understands the importance of intervening early in an individual’s health and life trajectory to prevent the morbidity and mortality of medical conditions that are prevalent in the United States.  She has an extensive knowledge about maternal-child health disparities and continues her scholarly and community service work to improve the lives of women and children.  She is the author of a peer reviewed article “Psychosocial Support for Teen Mothers” which describes the health disparities teens experience and her DNP project that supported healthy decision making and self-efficacy of teen mothers in an urban community.  Dr. Barnes is committed to educating the future RNs and APRNs, as well as provide contiuing education to health care providers encompassing a holistic and patient/family centered approach to providing health care to patients.
