Description

Dr. Alpern joined the full-time faculty at Long Island University as an Assistant Professor of Nursing in September of 2022 and has served as Graduate Program Director since Fall 2024. In this role, she is dedicated to supporting students on their journey toward becoming nurse practitioners and strengthening the graduate program’s teaching and learning practices 

 

Dr. Alpern teaches across the graduate curriculum, including nursing theory, health assessment, Diagnosis and Management I (Pediatrics and OB/GYN), and Graduate Primary Care, where she currently serves as Course Lead. Her undergraduate teaching experience includes nursing fundamentals and maternal-child nursing   

 

She chairs the LIU School of Nursing’s Center for Nursing Scholarship, which promotes faculty and student engagement in education and research presentations. She also serves as the secretary of LIU’s Sigma Theta Tau Omega Nu Chapter and is an active peer reviewer for several publications and professional organizations, including MCN: the Journal of Maternal Child Nursing, The Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP), and the National Organization for Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). 

 

Before transitioning to academia, Dr. Alpern practiced for three decades as a midwife and women’s health nurse practitioner. Her clinical work as a midwife encompassed prenatal, birth, family planning, and gynecologic care, serving diverse communities across New York City, including individuals living with HIV, speakers of multiple languages, and populations affected by the social disparities of health.
