Touring Faculty

Alexander Dashnaw, Director of Choral Activities in the Department of Music at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, has served as president of the Eastern Division of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and as president of the New York State Association of College Music Programs (NYSACMP). He has been the guest conductor of many regional, divisional and all-state choruses throughout the United States and has given many choral workshops for, among others, the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA).

Professor Dashnaw has also been the artistic director of many festivals, including the Manhattan Choral Festival, Chicago Choral Festival, Pacific Choral Festival, Atlanta Choral Festival, the Jubilee Festival in Washington, D.C., the Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland and the Tilles Invitational Choral Festival on Long Island.

Honored in 2001 as one of the 75 most influential people in the history of Long Island University, his talents and dedication have been recognized repeatedly.  Accolades include the Distinguished Service to Culture Award from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, Long Island University’s David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Long Island University Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement.

Maureen Hynes, Director of the Merriweather Consort, enjoys an active career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and teacher in the New York musical world. She performs regularly as cellist with the American Ballet Theater, the American Symphony Orchestra, the Opera Orchestra of New York, American Composers Orchestra, New York Virtuosi, the Westchester Philharmonic and the Long Island Philharmonic. She has also appeared with the Royal Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, at the Spoleto and Aspen Festivals and at the Lake George Opera Festival. Her work in New York has also included substitute work in many Broadway shows. Ms. Hynes was a winner of the Concert Artist Guild Award with the Janus Ensemble and she is currently a member of the Pierrot Consort. She has performed in Europe, Canada, Korea and Hong Kong both as cellist and gambist. In addition to being Professor of Cello and Director of String Studies at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, Ms. Hynes is director of the C.W. Post String Ensemble and Co-Founder and Co-Director of the C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival. She is a graduate of Manhattan School of Music, where she received her B.M. and M.M. degrees. Ms. Hynes has given Master Classes in Seoul, Korea and on Long Island and has coached at the Mannes Pre-College Division. She has recorded for the Albany label. She has studied viol with members of the New York Consort of Viols and is a member of Early Music America.

Jeffrey Johnson, director of the C.W. Post Madrigal Singers, has appeared on Broadway and off, in opera, regional theatre, and in several seminal theatre pieces including the video opera The Cave by Steve Reich and Beryl Korot, Einstein on the Beach by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass, The Boston Early Music production of Purcell's semi-opera King Arthur, and the multimedia opera Chaos at the Kitchen in New York. A founding member of the highly acclaimed male vocal ensemble "Lionheart," he also sings and records with the early music ensembles "New York Collegium," "The Voices of Ascension," and "Pomerium." Independent projects include performing as bass soloist in a Bach cantata series with the Orchestra of St. Lukes' Chamber Ensemble, a collaboration with the synthesist Wendy Carlos, work in extended vocal techniques, and a chant and sitar project entitled "Meeting of Angels." He is also active as a director of plays and theatre pieces. Recordings can be heard on Koch International Classics, Nimbus, RCA-Catalyst, Delos, Electra Nonesuch, Music Masters, Dorian, and Deutsche Grammaphon Archive.

Stuart Price, who has taught at C.W. Post since 1977, studied accompanying in California with the pre-eminent accompanist Gwendolyn Koldofsky, receiving his Master's degree from the University of Southern California. Since coming to New York, he has worked with many of the major opera companies on the East Coast, including the Metropolitan Opera, Boston Opera and Lake George Opera Company. He was also musical director for six productions with the Bel Canto Opera Company in New York. He accompanied Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Florence Quivar in a national tour and toured the United States and Canada with The Revelers Quartet. He has been involved with the C.W. Post Opera program since its inception.
