Paul S. Kim, Pianist

Dr. Paul Kim

Paul Kim has led a distinguished international career as a concert pianist of rare musical vision and integrity. His unique artistry has been noted for the engaging blend of exciting virtuosity, intellectual probity, and eloquent poetry. As a soloist Paul Kim has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras including those of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Toronto, Seoul, among many others. Audiences and critics alike have praised his charismatic interpretations of the music of Beethoven, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, the twentieth century American and French repertoire, and especially Olivier Messiaen. For close to three decades, Dr. Kim's performances, lectures and writings Messiaen's music have garnered much recognition throughout Europe, North America, and the Far East, including praises from the great composer himself.

In addition to his solo appearances, Paul Kim has performed jointly with his wife, the soprano Judith Jeon. Another unique dimension to Dr. Kim’s musical life is the concerts he performs with his pianist son Matthew. In 1996, when Matthew was only nine years old, the father-and-son duo pianists began their much-lauded series of concerts with a sold-out appearance in Carnegie Hall. Since 2002 the duo expanded to father-and-sons trio pianists with the addition of the younger son James. Many of their special concerts were presented in support of various social and charitable causes. The goodwill efforts of the father-and-sons pianists have been recognized and appreciated by various relief organizations and international dignitaries including Presidents Bush and Clinton. A profile of Paul Kim's journey of faith through his music is featured in the seminal book, CREATIVE SPIRITUALITY: THE WAY OF THE ARTIST, written by the eminent Princeton University sociologist Robert Wuthnow.

Paul Kim began his early musical training in Southern California and went on to study at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, receiving his B.M. and M.M. degrees. Subsequently he earned a Ph.D. in performance and musicology from New York University. Dr. Kim has taught at CUNY and New York University, and has given master classes and lecture recitals at many of the world's foremost universities and conservatories. His other musical activities include conducting, chamber music, composition, and international competition adjudication. Dr. Kim is currently a member of the music department faculty at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
