Paul S. Kim, Pianist

Paul Kim has led a distinguished international career as a concert pianist of rare musical vision and integrity. His unique artistry has been noted for the engaging blend of exciting virtuosity, intellectual probity, and eloquent poetry. As a soloist Paul Kim has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras including those of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Toronto, Seoul, among many others. Audiences and critics alike have praised his charismatic interpretations of the music of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, the twentieth century American and French repertoire, and especially Olivier Messiaen. For over two decades, Dr. Kim's performances, lectures and writings Messiaen's music have garnered much recognition throughout Europe, North America, and the Far East. He is currently in the midst of recording the complete piano works of Messiaen, on seven discs, for the Centaur Records label. The first album released in this historic series (which includes the performance if the groundbreaking work Catalogue d'oiseaux) has received worldwide critical acclaim. The second album, devoted to the great cycle Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus, is scheduled for release later this year. The third album, containing the two-piano masterpiece Visions de l'Amen, is a recording done with his son Matthew. The fourth, and final, album contains various early works (including Préludes).

In recent years, the concerts that Paul Kim has performed with his young son Matthew have received enthusiastic response from audiences around the world. In 1996, when Matthew was only nine years old, the duo pianists began their unique series of concerts with a sold-out appearance in Carnegie Hall. Beyond the musical ends, many of their special concerts were presented in support of various social and charitable causes. The goodwill efforts of the father-and-sons piano concerts have been recognized and appreciated by various relief organizations and international dignitaries including Presidents Bush and Clinton. A profile of Paul Kim's journey of faith through his music has been the focus in a recently published bestseller book entitled CREATIVE SPIRITUALITY: THE WAY OF THE ARTIST, written by the eminent Princeton University sociologist Robert Wuthnow.

Paul Kim began his early musical training in Southern California and went on to study at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, receiving his B.M. and M.M. degrees. Subsequently he earned a Ph.D. in performance and musicology from New York University. Dr. Kim has taught at CUNY and New York University, and has given master classes and lecture recitals at many of the world's foremost universities and conservatories. His other musical activities include conducting, chamber music, composition, and international competition adjudication. Dr. Kim is currently a member of the music department faculty at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
