New York Philharmonic Members For 2002 Residency
with The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra & The C.W. Post Orchestra

Kenneth Mirkin

An avid chamber player, violist Kenneth Mirkin has participated in summer musical events including the Aspen Festival and the Colorado Music Festival. Among his other passions are hiking, camping, rafting, tennis and photography. A recording artist, he performed Irwin Swack's Duo for Violin and Viola with Philharmonic violinist Oscar Ravina on a 1984 Orion Records release.

Mr. Mirkin, who joined the Orchestra in 1982, gives private viola lessons and is the New York Philharmonic coach for the viola sections of the New York Youth Symphony. When not on his native New York's Upper West side, Mr. Mirkin may be found pursuing another avid interest: travelling to places off the beaten path. During the past few summers, he has travelled and camped in Alaska, the Amazon, Thailand, and the Scottish Highlands - where he participated in an impromptu fiddling with the Orkney Strathspey and Reel Society.

Kenneth Mirkin serves as Chairman of the Tour Committee and has been active on the Orchestra's contract negotiating committee.

Robert Botti

Oboist Robert Botti joined the New York Philharmonic in 1992 after serving as Principal Oboe of the New York City Opera Orchestra. Most recently, as a soloist, he performed the Mozart Oboe Concerto with the New York Symphonic Ensemble in Alice Tully Hall. An active chamber musician, Mr. Botti is a member of the Sylvan Winds, with whom he has performed numerous premieres.

Mr. Botti performs frequently throughout the season with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles in both Avery Fisher and Merkin halls. As a guest on Judith LeClair's New York Legends recording, Mr. Botti performed the Tafelmusik Quartet by Telemann. He is featured on the premiere recording of Arnold Sturm's Suite for Oboe and Piano, and has participated in numerous other recordings with ensembles, including the Sylvan Winds, Philharmonia Virtuosi, New York Kammermusiker, Amadeus Ensemble, and Harmonie Ensemble. As a guest artist with Jazz at Lincoln Center he has collaborated and recorded with Gunther Schuller and Wynton Marsalis.

Mr. Botti holds bachelor's and master's degrees from The Juilliard School, where his teachers were Harold Gomberg and Ronald Roseman. He is on the faculty of SUNY Purchase, has served on the faculties of Princeton University and the Manhattan School of Music, and has given master classes at Yale, Princeton, and Indiana universities. He has also performed in the Grand Teton, Bach Stony Brook, and Music from Colorado festivals, He is the son of Walter Botti, Philharmonic bass player, who joined the Orchestra in 1952.

L. William Kuyper

The New York Philharmonic's Assistant Principal Hornist L. William Kuyper is active both in the United States and abroad as a soloist, clinician, and recording artist. He also appears regularly with the Philharmonic Ensembles in their acclaimed chamber-music series at Merkin Concert Hall. Mr. Kuyper joined the Philharmonic in 1969 after memberships in both the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and the United States Marine Band. While in the Marine Band, he had the distinction of participating in the State funeral service of President John F. Kennedy.

Mr. Kuyper's wife, Joan, is Deputy Director of the Society of Women Engineers World Headquarters and the author of a handbook for volunteer administration in museums and other cultural institutions, written for the American Association of Museum Volunteers and published in cooperation with the American Council for the Arts. The Kuypers are the parents of two children; Susan pursues a career in social work in San Francisco, and Edward is a process engineer in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Mr. Kuyper's other activities have involved the writing and production of an educational video, Steps to Excellence, for Yamaha Corporation of America. He has also arranged and edited various horn scores for Kendor Music, Inc. and the International Music Company. Mr. Kuyper's recording projects have included the Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings on the Vox label; on Elysium Recordings, Inc., in collaboration with other distinguished principals of the Philharmonic, The Complete Works for Winds and Piano of Robert Schumann; and Mozart: Elysium String Quartet & Friends, in which he performs the Horn Quintet.
