This course is part of a continuing series of performance-oriented courses designed to give Music Educators the opportunity to become more familiar with the various styles of music written for the orchestra. Each semester a different area of the repertoire will be examined and performed. In addition to rehearsals and performances there may be some scholarly written work. Attendance and participation is mandatory for this course.

AREA OF STUDY FOR FALL 2005:
ORCHESTRAL MUSIC BY TWO GENERATIONS OF AMERICAN COMPOSERS
The semester's rehearsals and concerts will focus on orchestral music written by American composers. The semester will be highlighted by a series of Orchestral Master Classes with C.W. Post Music Faculty and guest artists who are part of the Rose Tilles Artists in Residence program. Repertoire includes the music of Bernstein, Copland, Ives, Gershwin, Gould and American composers from this generation – Lowell Liebermann and Joshua Feltman.
Dr. Susan Deaver has been the Music Director and Conductor of the C. W. Post Orchestra since 1981. Dr. Deaver is well known on Long Island as a frequent clinician and guest conductor, and is experienced in working with undergraduate and graduate college musicians focusing on performance and music education. She was selected to participate in Tanglewood's Conducting Seminar Classes with Gustav Meier, the conducting seminars of the American Symphony Orchestral League, the Conductor's Guild and at Manhattan School of Music with Kurt Masur, Julius Rudel and Sixten Ehrling. As an orchestral fellowship student at Tanglewood in 1972, she worked with both Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. She was a guest conducted for SCMEA's 2004 All-County Division II Orchestra and guest conducted in Korea in May 2004. Dr. Deaver is currently on the music faculty at C.W. Post Campus/Long Island University, Stony Brook University and Manhattan School of Music's Pre-College. B.M., M.M. and D.M.A. from Manhattan School of Music.
Prerequisites and Enrollment Qualifications:
Experienced instrumentalists may be accepted by audition or director's interview only. Participants cannot be currently matriculated in a degree program at Long Island University.
Credits and Fees:
Three graduate level credits can be earned by fulfilling the course requirements, which include rehearsing and performing with the C.W. Post Orchestra. Tuition for the course is computed at a special reduced rate of
thirty-three percent of the current rate per credit. Overall cost will include tuition and standard University fees, and may include a one time University application fee of $30.00.
