Inside The Grand Balcony Hotel, Madame Irma serves “supper” to prominent clients. This house of illusions is actually a brothel, and “supper” is really glorious sexual fantasies to be simulated. Madame Irma furnishes the props, costumes and ladies. Outside the brothel, a revolution is turning bloody as the heads of the monarchy are being overthrown and killed in the streets. As the rebels move closer to the brothel, stray bullets and explosions force them to costume themselves and make a highly publicized appearance as the heads of the monarchy, leaving the audience to question whether they are inside a brothel, or a theatre. The class of 2009 has combined 8 thesis projects to approach this production as both actors and the production/design team. The aim of the project is to create a performance based on an existing text, using only actors. Consequently, all choices will be made from the actor’s point of view.

ROARING GIRLE

by Alice Tuan

Tuan has transformed this play into a relevant contemporary political satire, where Moll is a playwright-heroine who refuses to buckle under to a regime where business interests have subverted free speech.
