I am proud to say, “I am a high school English teacher.”
|
Loretta Sinopoli
I am a proud 2004 graduate of the Westchester Graduate Campus of Long Island University. After graduating in January 2004 with a Masters degree in education, I worked as a leave replacement for six months in Westchester, NY. Since August 2004, I have been teaching English at Westhill High School in Stamford, Connecticut.
Westhill High School is a great school, but initially I had doubts about teaching in such a large environment. It took me about a year to get acclimated to Westhill, but its diverse community of 2,400 students and 198 faculty members has had its advantages. First, I have been lucky enough to be part of the initial co-teaching inclusion model at Westhill which gives me the opportunity to work with reluctant students, as well as students with learning disabilities. Secondly, every summer I teach a six-week enrichment class at Westhill, which prepares students, including ESL students, for the Connecticut Assessment and Proficiency Tests (CAPT). I also serve as the tenth grade book chair, tutor students who are unable to pay, and work in the media every day after school. Finally, I work with a terrific staff of teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff. But most importantly, I have met my best friend, Asaka Niwa at Westhill, and have made other wonderful friendships that I hope will last my lifetime.

The Westchester Graduate Campus was instrumental in preparing me for the real world of teaching. I believe the professors are the very finest. I have an undergraduate degree from Pace University and a graduate degree in writing from Manhattanville College, but The Westchester Graduate Campus of Long Island University is leaps above the rest. Professors Janet Simon and Rebecca Rich not only taught theory, they taught by example. They demonstrated the strategies I needed to learn in order to teach effectively and reach all learners. However, it was Professor George Pietarinen , my English professor and mentor, who helped give me the confidence I needed to lead and facilitate a class. It was his encouragement, expertise (35 years teaching English) and guidance that confirmed this is what I was meant to do. It's because of him that I am proud to say, “I am a high school English teacher.” |
