Refund Policy

Students must initiate formal withdrawal procedures as outlined in the University Bulletin.  When students register for courses, they are considered to be in attendance until the date of their official withdrawal.  Failure to withdraw within posted deadline dates will result in the loss of possible refunds and/or grade changes.  The posted deadline dates are listed in the Academic Calendar and may be found in the Schedule of Classes and at http://www.brooklyn.liu.edu/registrar/academic_calendar.html

If a student withdraws after the fourth week of the semester, the symbol “W” will be entered on the transcript if satisfactory work was done up to the date of withdrawal.  If the student’s work was unsatisfactory, the symbol “WF” will be assigned by the instructor.  Students who are on academic probation and who withdraw from all courses are not eligible for readmission without the approval of the appropriate Dean.

Withdrawal Procedure

Students who wish to withdraw from one or more courses must obtain a withdrawal form from the Office of the Registrar.  The form must list the course(s) to be dropped as well as the section(s).  Students who are withdrawing from one or more but not all courses must obtain the signature of the Instructor.  Withdrawal from all courses does not require the Instructor’s or Dean’s signatures but it does require the student to see a counselor in the Office of Student Financial Services.

Students must submit the withdrawal form to the Office of the Registrar.

Cancellation of Courses
The University reserves the right to cancel undersubscribed courses. When it does so, there is no program change fee.

Loan Refunds
Continuing students will receive refunds as soon as their financial aid is applied to their accounts. Refunds need not be requested because they will be issued automatically. For up-to-date information, please visit the Student Information System on Long Island University's homepage www.liu.edu.

Refund checks are mailed to the student with the following exception: overpayments made via credit cards may be credited to the cardholder's account.

Financial aid is disbursed at different times throughout the semester causing some students to receive their entire refund in more than one check. Students who were mailed a refund check and have not received it in a reasonable amount of time may come to the Office of the Bursar and fill out a Refund Check Replacement Form. Lost refund checks that have not been cashed will be reissued within ten business days.

All refund checks are mailed to the student's local address. Students who wish to pick up their refund checks must inform the Office of the Bursar. Checks must be picked up at the University Center in Brookville, Long Island. Contact the Bursar's Office for information and directions. No check will be disbursed without proper identification.
