Funkloric
Funkloric, a parody of the word "folkloric", is a musical ensemble whose composers continue in the traditions of Béla Bartók and Percy Grainger
The members of the group seek out folk melodies, rhythms, and forms from all over the globe. Their resulting compositions often become a pastiche of traditions from varying cultures and continents: Brazilian rhythm supports a tribal theme from Kenya; a Mozambique groove lays the foundations for a Cuban melody; or several Cuban rhythm-types accompany a Navajo work song.
Since these composers are also jazz musicians, the pieces were intended also as vehicles for improvisation. Funloric began in 1955 playing in Jazz clubs on Long Island. They continue to this day to explore newly found material, and present their works at concerts, clinics, and educational events. They have one CD which is currently available.
Band Members: Kenny Hassler, Drums/Leader; Steve Salerno, Guitar; Wayne Schuster,Woodwinds; Chris Culver, Trombone; Robyn Lobe, Percussion; Ken Rizzo, Bass |
