Master of Science in Art Education

The Graduate Art Education Degree program offers a unique opportunity for students seeking to continue their development as artists-and teachers of young people. In every phase of work emphasis will be placed on the originality and substance of artistic concepts and scholarly comprehension of the problems and techniques of teaching studio art, art history and criticism and aesthetics. Two separate plans of study have been designed, to meet the needs of graduate students; one for new entrants in the field and one for the practicing Art Educator. Each student's program of study is individually designed to meet his or her special needs through private conferences with two Graduate Advisors. For the Art side of your degree your advisor will be Cathy Morante who can be contacted at (516) 299-2465 or on email at Cathy.Morante@liu.edu, and for your Education classes your advisor will be Daniel Heller at (516) 299-2183.

Special Requirements for some M.S. Applicants
If the applicant has fewer then 36 undergraduate studio Art credits they will only be excepted as a "limited-matriculant" until this New York State requirement is satisfied. Also if the Art Department feels it is necessary after reviewing an applicants portfolio, they may require that the student take additional Art and/or Art History courses to eliminate a deficiency before being admitted into the Master's Degree program. These credits cannot be applied towards a masters degree. The student's status will be "limited-matriculant" until these courses are completed and a grade of B or better is attained. In some cases a second portfolio review will be required for full matriculation.
Transfer Credits
If pertinent to the applicant's plan of study, a maximum of 12 graduate credits with a grade of B or better may be transferred from another universities graduate program (15 credits from within Long Island University).
The transfer will take place after the completion of 15 credits within this program but the request must be made at the time of the original application to the degree program and must be approved by the Graduate Advisor.

Degree Requirements for an M.S. in Art Education
Complete, with an average of B or better, an approved program of 36 or 42 (see description below) credit hours including at least 18 hours in courses at the 600 and 700 level.
