WebCT Account Information for Students

WebCT Login Instructions | SIS Instructions | Configuration Instructions | How-To's

Logging into WebCT 6.0

1. From Internet Explorer or any web browser, enter the following address to get to the WebCT logon page: http://webct.liu.edu/ Select the WebCT 6.0 version on the right.
2. Under Institution Name, click Long Island University.
3. Click the Log In button.
4. In the User Name box enter your WebCT ID.Your user name is "firstname.lastname" - notice that it is case sensitive.
5. Press the tab key or click in the Password box.
6. Enter your password - which is your SIS password. (By default, your SIS password is your social security number. If you've never logged into SIS, you should do so and change your password. Directions follow below.)
7. Select the appropriate course title under the center column.

How do I obtain my SIS and WebCT username & password?

1. From Internet Explorer or any web browser, enter the following address to get to the LIU home page: http://www.liu.edu/
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Student Information Systems link.
3. Click on your campus location.
4. Below the login box is a link if you do not know your ID and password. Click this link (shown in red).
5. Click in the box next to Social Security # and type your Social Security Number without dashes or spaces.
6. Press the tab key or click in the Password box.
7. Type in your password and click on Submit. If you have never used the Student Information Systems before, your password is your Birth Date in the format YYYYMMDD.  For example, if your birthday is October 28, 1977, you would enter 19771028.
8. Your WebCT user ID will be in the format firstname.lastname, and your password will match the password you have created for your SIS account.


If you have performed the Browser Check in the new version of WebCT, and receive notice there is an incompatibility, here are documents and instructions that may help:

  • Forward (a copy of) your E-mail from your WebCT course to your LIU e-mail account or to an external e-mail account.
  • Pop-up Blocker Preventing You From Previewing Content?

    If a pop-up blocker is activated, you may be prohibited from viewing some content your instructor has placed in the WebCT course. If this occurs, you can:

    1.  Hold down the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard while selecting the content. Continue to hold down the "Ctrl" key until you select the Open option.
    2.  Disable the pop-up blocker that is embedded in your browser or tool bar. To disable your Google toolbar from blocking documents from WebCT, please review the instructions on the pdf file: Logging into WebCT

    If you have to install or reinstall a Java plug-in on your laptop, try following these directions:

    1.  From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel.
    2.  Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3.  Locate all versions of Sun Java, JRE, or JVM.
    4.  For each version, click Change/Remove and follow the onscreen instructions.
    5.  Download Java Plug-In.

    To install the Java Plug-In, accept the license agreement and follow the online and onscreen instructions.

    After installing the Plug-In and rebooting your computer, do not download updates for the JRE. Disable automatic checking for Java updates:

    1.  From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel.
    2.  Double-click Java Plug-in.
    3.  Click the Update tab.
    4.  Clear the checkbox next to Check for Updates Automatically.
    5.  Click Apply.
    6.  Click the "x" to close the Java Plug-in Control Panel window.
