Academic Computing:
Software descriptions on LIUNET

(Not all descriptions are listed)
Computers have been present in Higher Education for quite some time. Millions of dollars have been invested at colleges and universities in Personal Computers, hardware and software, and LIU is no exception. While technology is developing and spreading throughout campuses, so does the pressure from government and industry on institutions of higher education to produce a computer literate student body and a work force prepared to compete in an increasingly technological society. The "after-school world" is becoming more and more computer oriented and the computer illiterate student will have difficulty finding a job, especially in today's tough economic climate.
0
Academic Computing understands the need to integrate this information technology into the curriculum and we feel we have a variety of programs that are currently in use in business, industry, and education. Using them should help keep the LIU student on the competitive edge in the "after-school world".

These are some of the Major Programming Languages Available:
Visual BASIC:
The quikest and easiest way to create applications for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Allows you to create attractive and useful applications that fully exploit the graphical user interface.
Visual C/C++:
Development system for Windos and Windows NT adds fully intergrated Windows based develoment tools and a "visual" user interface driven paradigm to the traditional C/C++ development process.
BASIC:
A simple but powerful language designed for students, BASIC is fairly easy to learn, yet provides surprising flexibility for mathematically-oriented problems. It is designed for the on-line, interactive user.
COBOL:
A powerful language, best used in Business or data entry/retrieval/manipulation applications Associated utilities exist for SORT, ISAM and SQL, (structured query language).
FORTRAN:
A mathematically-oriented language, FORTRAN is perhaps one of the most efficient languages available, but falls short in the handling of character-strings and non-homogenous data-structures.
LISP:
An artificial intelligence language that can perform highly complex arithmetical functions.
MACRO:
The Macro-assembler language of the VAX. MACRO is very powerful, but due to its extreme complexity, its use is discouraged by other than seasoned assembly-level language programmers.
PASCAL:
A highly efficient compiler combining fine structured programming facilities (procedures are block-oriented) with sophisticated provisions for data-declaration.
ADA:
ADA is a modern algorithmic programming language that also covers real-time programming with facilities to model parallel tasks and to handle exceptions.
C/C++:
A powerful, structured language used in the program development of scientific and graphics applications; easily transportable between machines.
Modula-2:
A highly structured (block oriented) language for use by programmers who must learn structured programming techniques and system utilities.
Debugging facilities exist for ALL programming languages.

Business, Science and Statistical Software:
MicroTSP
MicroTSP provides regression and forecasting tools on the IBM Personal Computer. With MicroTSP you can develop a statistical relation from your data and then use the relation to forecast future values of the data. Areas where MicroTSP can be useful include:
Sales forecasting
Cost analysis and forecasting
Financial analysis
Macroeconomic forecasting
Simulation
Scientific data analysis and evaluation
MicroTSP uses Time Series data manipulation method taken from software originally developed for large computers. This application also includes the Citibase Financial Database.
SPSS and SAS:
Statistical packages for virtually any analysis that you can think of. Has an internal report generator and sort/merge capabilities. This is available as non-conversational in nature with a very versatile command language or interactive. These packages are available on the Novell LANs in Windows and Dos as well as PTHWK2 and Aurora.
ASP:
A simpler less sophisticated statistical program for the IBM Personal Computer platform. Statistical routines available are the following:
Regression analysis
Analysis of Variance
Scatter/Normal Plots
Probability Distribution
Hypothesis Tests
Simple Linear Programming
and more.
Linear programming (LP)
MILP is a general-purpose system for solving linear programs. It lets you set up and solve linear programs with up to 1200 constraints and 6000 variables. Linear programming applications supported include production, mixing, scheduling, finance, inventory, cash management, transportation and network problems.
L.I.U. Academic Computing Services
Mixed - Integer Linear Programming( MILP)
MILP is a general-purpose system for solving linear programs in which several of the variables are restricted to integer values. It lets you set up and solve mixed-integer linear programs with up to 800 constraints and 4000 integer or non integer variables. Problems are solved using an advanced application of the "branch and bound" method. Linear programming applications supported include production, mixing, scheduling, finance, inventory, cash management, transportation and network problems.
Transportation Programming (TSA)
TSA lets you set up and solve transportation, assignment and transshipment problems with as many as 1300 sources (origins) and/or sinks (destinations) . Problems may include capacities (upper limits) on the flow permitted from sources to sinks. The classical transportation problem is a linear program whose variables are defined as the flow from sources to sinks. The objective is to minimize total cost without exceeding supplies at the sources or leaving unsatisfied demands at the sinks. The problem is a "capacitated" transportation problem if there are upper bounds to the flows that are permitted between any of the sources and sinks. Transshipment problems are transportation problems with points that serve as intermediate sources and sinks.
Investor
The objectives of the Investor courseware are for the student to gain a combination of knowledge and experience in:
- Using security valuation and leverage analysis models.
- Researching and formulating logical investment plans.
- Designing strategies and analytical frameworks to execute those plans.
- Constructing and managing portfolios based on those plans.
- Monitoring the performance of those portfolios against actual, real-time market conditions.
@RISK
A Risk analysis program to help decision makers successfully manage situations subject to uncertainty. This application works under Lotus 123 and allows you to design a model which best satisfies the needs of the situation at hand. @RISK uses a technique called "simulation" to combine all the uncertainties you identify in your modeling situation. One of the simulation's greatest strengths is its power of communication, it gives you results that graphically illustrate the risks you face.
Gaussian:
Gaussian94 is a series of programs for performing semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations.
More information at www.gaussian.com
Mopac:
This is a program for performing semi-empirical calculations on atoms and molecules.
More information at www.ssd.intel.com/appsw/mopac.html
MM2, MM3:
This is a program for modeling organic compunds.
More information at www.tripos.com
