Major Communications Resources

At the core of the Academic Computing Network (LIUNET) is a fiber optic backbone running Ethernet and other broadband topologies which permit any PC or terminal on LIUNET to connect to any of the computers on the system. Terminals distributed throughout the C.W. Post, Southampton and Brooklyn campuses communicate over fiber optic cable directly to network routers. This fiber optic cable connects most of the major Academic, Administrative and Dormitory buildings on campus and is capable of transmission speeds in excess of 100 Mbytes per second and connects to our integrated data, video and voice network .

The Brooklyn, C.W. Post, Rockland, Brentwood, Westchester and Southampton Campuses are linked via leased T1 (1.544MB) lines, ATT/Paradyne DSU’s and Ethernet Bridges. All campuses utilize Novell LAN software for DOS based communications, Pathworks (an Appleshare type product) for Mac communications, TCP/IP, DECNET, and LAT for workstation, minicomputer and INTERNET access.

Recently, Academic Computing completed upgrades across the network on a massive scale. Throughput has been significantly increased and should be noticeable on the desktop. 100MB routers and switches to handle our main host computers have been added at Brooklyn and Post. We have also installed Ethernet switches directly onto the communications backbone to allow faster connection to file servers at Southampton, Brooklyn and Post.

All intercampus routers have been upgraded to the newest Cisco and Xyplex models offering far greater performance. We now have three paths to Brooklyn and two paths to Southampton. In addition, each path is served by its own router, so no one router can take down the communications between 2 campuses.

GETTING CONNECTED

Getting connected to LIUNET seems almost a necessity these days. Access to the full range of minicomputers, microcomputer software, E-mail and the INTERNET is only available once you jump on the "Information SuperHighway". Throughout the university we have tried to make this process as painless as possible. We have wired most buildings to LIUNET with fiber optics and virtually every floor is connected. However, cabling to individual offices is still taking place.

To get your office or office area connected the first thing you must have is a computer. Funds for these computers are allocated from capital budgets controlled by the Deans and Provosts on each campus. Once the computer is in place you will need a network card (to communicate with LIUNET) and an access port. That is all, it is actually a simple process. Academic Computing will place some files on your hard disk once we connect you to LIUNET which you can never change, just like installing any piece of equipment on your computer.

Once you are connected, you will probably want your own individual user account. This is necessary if you want to use electronic mail, since it is your address (like your house address) where other colleagues can find you. You may get an account on any of the computer systems within LIU regardless of the campus they are physically located on.

The costs for this connection are minimal and the information we need is basic. We will perform a site survey prior to installation in every case.

Cost: $150 this is for the network card and port charge

We need the following information in a memo to Academic Computing:

Computer type (386, 486, Pentium, Mac Quadra, Power Mac, etc.)

Exact location of computer to be connected

Person responsible for computer

Budget number to charge for network card

The process involves ordering the network card if we do not have it in stock and then running cable to your office if it is not already in place. If everything is in place and in stock the connection time may take just a few days, if not, it can take several weeks.
