Introduction to Brooklyn Campus ListServ Information

A ListServ is available to any Department and Faculty member in need of a mailing list. To request a ListServ to be created, Email listadmin@brooklyn.liu.edu with your name, department, a list of subscribers and purpose of the ListServ. All lists are pending until approved by the Dean of Information Technology or Associate VP of Information Systems.

What is a mailing list?
A mailing list is an automated way of sending a large amount of emails to a group of people. This group of people is called a list. When someone wants to send Email to everyone in the list, the subscribed user will send the Email to the list address. The listserv will automatically copy the incoming mail and send it out to the Email addresses contained in the list.

What is a ListServ?
A ListServ is an automated mailing list program that allows automatic processing of administrative tasks to manage the list. These tasks can include SUBSCRIBE, UNSUBSCRIBE and change password. Other programs include listproc, majordomo, Mailserv.

What is the list address?
The list address is the Email address to which you send the message that you want to distribute to everyone on the list. The list address will normally look like:

<list name>@lists.liu.edu

For example: bkn-it-list@lists.liu.edu

How to SUBscribe to the ListServ?
To add your name to an LIU mailing list, go to https://lists.liu.edu/mailman/listinfo, click on the list you wish to subscribe. Follow the instruction and fill out your Email and password, then click subscribe to finish.

An Email will be sent to your Email automatically. Please read this Email and save it for information on how to administer your account.

NOTE: If you are NOT subscribed or part of the list, you CANNOT send Email to the list address to be distributed. Only subscribed emails can sent to the list address in order for the ListServ to distribute.

IMPORTANT: The ListServ uses your Email address as authentication. If you are trying to send an Email to the list address with another or different Email account, the ListServ will NOT send the Email. The ListServ will only distribute email sent to the list address from those email addresses that are listed on its subscribed Email database.

Why only subscribed Email can send to the list address?
Basically it will prevent spam and unsolicited emails. An open list is an invitation for spammers and advertisers to clog your mailbox with worthless emails.

How to UNsubscribe?
To remove your Email from the list, instructions on how to do so was sent to you when you were first subscribed. Remember ListServ is self administrating. You may change your Email, password or unsubscribe yourself from the user interface.
