Marjorie Merriweather Post designated a special room of the first floor of the mansion to creation of flower arrangements. Each day a staff member would bring in fresh flowers that had been cut in the estate greenhouses and cutting gardens. These flowers were arranged in this room which was located off the Great Hall foyer.

When Long Island University purchased the estate it was obvious that a flower arranging room would not be necessary. The administration decided to convert the space into a staircase that led to the second floor.

On March 22, 2005, as preparations for a new bathroom were underway, the original wall paper of the flower arrangement room was revealed after being hidden for nearly 50 years.
