These bricks above the western porte-cochere are listed in original construction
notes as "burnt bricks." The bricks were removed from old buildings
in New York City, which were scheduled for demolition. The architect felt
that using bricks that had been burnt in a fire give the façade a
more aged appearance. Burnt bricks have also been used in other sections
of the mansion as well. |
