KIICHI TAKEUCHI

Earth Science, Class of 2011

Kiichi TakeuchiKiichi Takeuchi enrolled in the earth science master's degree program at LIU Post as a way to put his knowledge of technology to use in a critically important area. Working with Dr. Patrick Kennelly, a professor of geography, Kiichi helped develop an iPhone application called iSeismometer, which measures the motion of the earth. Downloads of the software nearly quadrupled after the deadly earthquake in L'Aquila, Italy last April. The iSeismometer application rocketed to No. 3 on the Italian iTunes application store. Now, Kiichi and his professor have applied for research funding to see whether phones running iSeismometer could form an earthquake warning network. "I wanted to leverage my knowledge," said Kiichi, who already has a master's degree in computer science from LIU Brooklyn. "I want to see what I can achieve when I combine my computer science knowledge with other fields."
