County Executive Andrew Spano Addresses
Westchester Graduate Campus of Long Island University Commencement
118 students receive graduate degrees

Purchase, N.Y. - On Tuesday, May 18, Westchester County Executive Andrew J. Spano spoke at the commencement exercises at the Westchester Graduate Campus of Long Island University. During the festivities, which recognized the achievements of 118 students, Dr. David J. Steinberg, the University's president, conferred master's degrees in the areas of teacher education, school counseling, school psychology and library science. The commencement ceremony was held at 7 p.m. in the Music Building 's Recital Hall at Purchase College.

As commencement speaker, Mr. Spano shared a special bond with the graduating students, many of whom soon will join Westchester's schools and libraries as new professionals. Early in his own career, he spent 25 years in public education, served as a teacher, counselor and administrator, worked with children with special needs and helped to found the United Federation of Teachers in New York City.

In 1998, Andrew Spano was elected to the highest office in Westchester County, a diverse and thriving region with nearly 900,000 residents. A native of the Bronx, Mr. Spano holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Fordham University and has received numerous education, government, human rights and labor awards.

Associate Provost Sylvia Blake expressed great pride in the educators and library professionals emerging from the Westchester Graduate Campus. She noted, "Long Island University truly is answering the needs of the Westchester and the neighboring regions as well as advancing our mission to provide access and excellence in higher education."
