This one-year Community Pharmacy Practice Residency is intended to provide
pharmacy professionals with an expert level of competency in community
practice. The need for pharmacists who have the ability to respond to
the new opportunities in community care is expanding and flourishing.
This post-doctoral training program will provide the resident with the
ability to meet these needs. The resident will have the opportunity to
develop and refine their skills in areas of patient care, pharmacy education
and project development, including the development of innovative patient
care services. The program allows for sufficient flexibility to tailor
to the individual needs and interests of the resident, yet provides the
resident the opportunity to develop expert skills in the provision of
pharmaceutical care in the community practice setting.
Practice Site Descriptions
- Duane Reade Pharmacy
Duane Reade is a 160-unit chain pharmacy located throughout the New
York City area. Duane Reade is an innovative community practice setting
with a central filling center, which provides comprehensive pharmacy
services to customers and patients. This "Professional Care Pharmacy
Unit" includes the main pharmacy and dispensing area, a call
center, consultation areas, and the means to develop and establish
disease state management programs and comprehensive services. This
allows the community pharmacist to provide optimal care and service
to the patient.
- Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,
Long Island University
The Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy is located in
Brooklyn, New York and currently offers a six-year Doctor of Pharmacy
program as well as other degrees in Industrial Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics,
Toxicology and Administrative Sciences. The resident will have the
opportunity to participate in numerous academic activities at the
Brooklyn campus.

The resident will have the opportunity to provide pharmaceutical care
and implement patient care services, such as diabetes, smoking cessation
and asthma education at Duane Reade Pharmacies throughout the residency.
The resident will be able to choose among the many projects that Duane
Reade Corporate Headquarters is involved with, including medication adherence
programs and pharmacist education services. In addition, the resident
will have the opportunity to work at a Family Medicine Clinic associated
with Montefiore Hospital. This will allow the resident to collaborate
with physicians and other health care providers, as well as implement
patient education services and be a part of the health care team. As part
of the program, residents will also be involved in numerous didactic activities
at the college of pharmacy and serve as a mentor and preceptor for Pharm.D.
students at experiential sites.

Specific residency goals and objectives will be established in the beginning
of the residency with the input of the resident, residency director and
residency preceptors. Overall, learning objectives of this program are
to:
- Develop teaching skills by mentoring and precepting Pharm.D. students
at experiential sites, as well as conducting didactic activities at
the college of pharmacy
- Acquire a comprehensive understanding of corporate policies, operations
financial, marketing, and other applicable management principles related
to community pharmacy practice
- Develop and implement new patient care services in the community setting
- Refine clinical problem solving skills
- Enhance and refine drug information and data collection skills
- Present a research project at a national meeting
- Enhance communication skills through formal lectures, continuing education
presentations, publications for newsletters and peer-reviewed journals
and patient educational programs
- Collaborate with physicians and other health care providers in the
goal of providing continuity of care for patients

The resident will receive the following benefits:
- Annual stipend of $38,000

Eligibility (top

Candidates for the residency must posses a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from
a school of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical
Education (ACPE) and must be eligible for licensure in New York. Prior
clerkship experience in providing pharmaceutical care in the community
setting is encouraged but not required.

All application materials must be received by January 7, 2002, in order
to be considered for the residency program beginning September 1, 2002.
Selected candidates will be invited for an on-site interview after all
application materials are received.Completed applications must include:
- 1. A letter of intent expressing interest in pursuing a position
for the residency
- 2. Three letters of recommendation (2 faculty, 1 employer)
- 3. Academic transcripts and
- 4. Curriculum vitae.
