Pharmacotherapeutics (top)


The specialization of Pharmaco-therapeutics is available to those individuals holding a baccalaureate degree from an accredited program in pharmacy, nursing or physician assistant and is intended to develop the skills needed to:

1. interface with physicians in providing and monitoring drug therapy, particularly in skilled nursing facilities;

2. take an active part in designing and conducting clinical studies along with physicians and other health professionals in drug utilization and reviews, drug audits, and drug surveillance programs;

3. review and disseminate information to health professionals regarding drug efficacy and toxicity; and

4. critically evaluate the clinical drug studies in the literature.

Pharmacology/Toxicology (top)


The specialization in Pharmacology/ Toxicology is available to those individuals holding a baccalaureate degree from an accredited program in biological or chemical sciences and related disciplines, pharmacy graduates and other health care practitioners. The program is intended to develop the skills needed to:

1. pursue a research and/or teaching career in a related discipline;
2. determine drug activity, effectiveness and toxicity;
3. develop new methodologies for drug evaluation according to good laboratory practices; and
4. critically evaluate experimental data as presented in the literature.

Undergraduate Prerequisites:
Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology

Degree Requirements

Students taking the Non-Thesis Option must complete 35 credits of course work for Pharmacotherapeutics, 34 credits of course work for Pharmacology/Toxicology and pass the written Comprehensive Examination. Students taking the Thesis Option must complete 32 credits of course work for Pharmacotherapeutics, 31 credits of course work for Pharmacology/ Toxicology of which 6 credits are for Research and Thesis, PTM 060. Thesis students must register for PTM 060 in two consecutive semesters, 3 credits each semester.
