The Department of Public Safety at the C.W. Post Campus of
Long Island University is located in the Facilities Services
building at the northeast corner of the Campus. The Department has a full-time staff that consists of a Director, an Associate Director, three Administrative staff, six Field Supervisors and 22 Public Safety Officers. Public Safety Officers are licensed by the State
of New York and are trained, certified and registered pursuant
to the New York State Security Guard Act of 1992. The Department
serves the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year-round
and may be reached by dialing 2214 (2222 for emergencies)
on campus telephones (add prefix 299 when using outside lines).
The Department of Public Safety is concerned with the welfare
and safety of all members of the campus community and their
guests. The activities of the Department of Public Safety
are enhanced by its close relationship with the Nassau County
Police Department, the Old Brookville Police Department and
the Old Westbury Police Department, all of whom share the
responsibility of maintaining law and order on the Campus.
These agencies often notify the Department of any off-campus
arrest involving members of the Campus community if there
is a perceived threat to the welfare of the other members.
Marked patrol units from the Department of Public Safety,
as well as those from the aforementioned police departments,
patrol the Campus regularly. Although Public Safety Officers
are not peace officers, they do handle criminal acts and crime
scenes until the police departments arrive. Suspects are identified
and detained for action by the arriving police personnel.
