Frequently Asked Questions

The following are questions that are most commonly asked by students and their families, as they prepare to register for Orientation. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact eric.lucrezia@liu.edu or call 516- 299-2606 for more information.

What is the purpose of summer Orientation?
We have several goals for the Orientation Program. First, we want to introduce all new students and their families to the C.W. Post community. Then, we’d like to familiarize you with the campus and what we’re all about. You’ll learn about academic requirements, policies and procedures, community standards and expectations, residence life and commuter student services, health and counseling services, financial aid procedures, personal safety, intramural and athletic programs, student organizations and student activities. As a new member of the C.W. Post community, you’ll have time during Summer Orientation to meet new classmates and returning students while getting to know educators inside and outside of the classroom setting.

What will I do at Orientation?
You will have the chance to do the following, and more, during your weekend at Orientation:

  • Meet the Student Orientation Leaders and Coordinators
  • Enjoy a continental breakfast with your parents and peers
  • Begin to get to know your new classmates
  • Discover more about the Campus Life departments and the services that are offered on campus during the academic year
  • Meet distinguished members of the faculty
  • Discover the diversity on our campus
  • Attend the club fair and learn about how to get involved on campus
  • Get educated on the expectations and explore the opportunities available to you

Do I have to stay overnight?
Yes, it is required of all students to stay overnight in our residence hall. You will be assigned a roommate, and will give you the chance to interact with other students and have the experience of living on campus.

Which session should I attend?

New Students (under 30 credits)
New Students (who have earned 0 – 30 credits) have three choices: July 16-18, July 30- August 1 and August 13-15. It is STRONGLY recommended that you attend one of these overnight sessions. Whether you live close to campus or far away, it is a requirement for you to stay overnight and stay for the entire weekend. As you complete the Summer Orientation Registration Form at the end of this brochure, please be sure to indicate your first, second, and third orientation choices. Some dates reach capacity more quickly than others. The sooner you return the form, the better the chance you have of getting your first choice.

Transfer Students, Graduate Students and Adult Students
Transfer students, Graduate Students and Adult Students (undergraduate students over the age of 25) are encouraged to attend.

What is family Orientation?
Parents and families have their own special program concurrently with, but different from your own. The Family Orientation is a hald day program. During this time, your family members will have an opportunity to meet others on the same journey as you, participate in discussions, and learn more about the C.W. Post community.

What accommodations are provided?
Whether you will be commuting or living on campus, we require that all orientation attendees sleep overnight and stay for the entire weekend. It will give you a great opportunity to see how the residence halls are set-up and what it’s like to have a roommate. It will also give you the chance to have downtime with your fellow classmates before school starts.

Any family members that wish to stay overnight will be responsible for making reservations at an off-campus accommodation. For a list of local hotels click here.

How do I register for Orientation?
Please fill out the registration form and send it in with your payment of $100, payable to "LIU – CW Post". If any of your family members are attending, you can include their fee in the same check. (The cost is $30 per person.) After receiving your completed registration form and full payment, we will send you a postcard confirming the arrangements for your visit. The excitement of Orientation awaits you at C.W. Post.

What meals are provided?
We want you to have the chance to sample college food first-hand as well as get a feel for the C.W. Post dining hall facilities. We’ve arranged for Dining Services to prepare all of your meals during Orientation.

What is the cost for Orientation?
Sessions I-II:
New Student Orientation:           $100 per student
Family Orientation:                     $30 per family member

Session III                                   $30 per person

We will make every effort to place you in your first choice; however, sessions are filled on a first come, first served basis. Please return your registration form as quickly as possible. If you have concerns or questions, feel free to contact Student Life at (516) 299-2606.
