Latino Studies Journal Fosters Understanding of Latino/a
Groups
August 27, 1998 -- The Winter and Spring 1998 issues of Latino Studies
Journal - a multi-disciplinary publication devoted to the study of contemporary
and historic Latino/a life in American society - are now available from
the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the C.W. Post Campus of
Long Island University in Brookville, NY.
The Latino Studies Journal publishes articles and manuscripts on all
aspects of the experiences of Latino/a people. "It places particular
emphasis upon publications which can contribute in the promotion and advancement
of the understanding of individual and collective concerns and activities
of America's multi-cultural, intra-Latino/a groups," according to
Dr. Felix M. Padilla, a C.W. Post professor of sociology and editor of
the journal. LSJ recognizes and honors the richness and diversity of the
Latino/a world and provides a forum for the expression of both individual
cultural and, at times, all-encompassing, universal Latino/a thought and
action.
The Winter 1998 issue includes articles on the political economy after
NAFTA, Latino empowerment, and a review essay regarding the struggle of
Latino/a university students in search of a liberating education.
The Spring 1998 issue addresses topics such as the genesis of academic
Chicano studies, religious adaptation among second generation Adventists,
and an analysis of the 1990 and 1992 voter registration data.
Dr. Padilla, a resident of Long Beach, founded the LSJ in the Fall of
1988. He is the author of five major books on Latino/a experience in the
United States, including The Gang as an American Enterprise (1992) and
The Struggle of Latino Latina University Students in Search of a Liberating
Education (1997). He has written a dozen journal articles on topics such
as Puerto Rican, Mexican American and Cuban relations; the sociology of
Latino culture and identity; the sociology of salsa music; and Latino/a
youth gangs.
