C.W. Post to Offer New Field-Based Program in Roslyn Schools
October 16, 1998 -- Over the past decade, teacher education reform has
emphasized the benefits of hands-on training for teachers, proving that
the experience gained inside an actual classroom is far more important
than rote textbook theory. Yet, most teacher education programs afford
prospective teachers hands-on experience only at the end of their degree
program - often in the form of a brief, one-semester student teaching experience.
In response, the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long
Island University has created a new field-based master's degree program
designed to give prospective teachers the hands-on experience they need
right from the beginning of their academic program.
In a partnership with the award-winning Roslyn School District, graduate
students in the new Master's in Elementary Education at C.W. Post will
receive valuable field-based experience from the outset of their degree
program, according to Dr. Anthony DeFalco, chairperson of the Department
of Curriculum and Instruction. An unprecedented advantage, these students
will be participating in classes at Roslyn's Heights Primary School, attending
multiple school functions, and learning first-hand from experienced professionals
in the district. Classes taught by C.W. Post faculty will also be held
on-site, giving students in the program the opportunity to make the most
of their experience at the Heights School as they work toward their degrees.
"We view this program as part of our long-range goal to prepare
the next generation of teachers for the 21st Century," said Dr. Judith
Glazer, committee chair of the new C.W. Post program. "We are very
pleased to be working with Superintendent Frank Tassone and his staff in
this innovative new project, and are grateful for their support of our
efforts to improve teacher education in New York State." While two
courses will be offered on-site in this initial semester, plans are already
in place to expand the program next year.
The School of Education at C.W. Post offers one of the largest and most
comprehensive teacher education, counseling and administration programs
in New York State. With seven departments offering a wide range of programs
on both the undergraduate and graduate level, the School of Education has
prepared more than 25,000 students for the rigors of public and private
education with extensive field experience, technology-rich clinical laboratories,
and a fully accredited speech and hearing clinic.
Registration for this program is highly selective. Applications are
now being accepted for the new program, which begins in January 1999. For
