C.W. Post Offers New Master of Science Degree in Adolescence Education (7-12)

Brookville, NY - Beginning this Fall 2007, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is offering a new master's degree program that targets change-of-career professionals seeking to make an impact in the field of education. The Master of Science degree in Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) is designed to educate and train new teachers who possess a strong academic background in core subjects particularly in mathematics and science.

The program is offered through C.W. Post's nationally recognized School of Education and expands teaching opportunities for individuals who have undergraduate or graduate degrees in English, social studies, mathematics, science or foreign languages and plan to become New York State-certified teachers.

Acceptance into the program is contingent upon students having an undergraduate or post-graduate concentration (minimum 30 credits) in English, mathematics, social studies, earth science, biology, chemistry and languages other than English (Spanish, Italian or German). Successful completion of the 33-credit Master of Science Degree in Adolescence Education leads to teaching certification in New York State and provides a thorough development of students' teaching skills.

"The master's program affords students who have never taught before the opportunity to equip themselves with hands-on skills and knowledge through student teaching at middle and high schools," said Dr. Robert Manheimer, dean of the C.W. Post School of Education. "And with New York State facing a dire shortage of math and science teachers, the program is especially appealing for those who have that background and would now like to share their knowledge with middle or high school students."

Classes are offered in the evening and in some cases on weekends, allowing students to balance their studies with work and family responsibilities. Professors are accessible and dedicated to helping students succeed. Courses are challenging and stimulating, and curricula are up to date with the latest trends, advances and research.
