Dr. Patrick P. McGuire Appointed Associate Dean of
College of Information and Computer Science at C.W. Post

Brookville, N.Y. -- Dean John Regazzi of the College of Information and Computer Science at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University has announced the appointment of Dr. Patrick P. McGuire as associate dean and associate professor of library science.  In this newly created role in the college, he will focus primarily on three areas: student services, administrative services, and program development. 

Dr. McGuire began his professional career as a high school teacher and served as assistant dean in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at St. John’s University for the past 14 years.  Additionally, he taught as an adjunct assistant professor in the areas of information ethics, international librarianship, the American college student, health care ethics, business ethics, ethics in the cinema, and a core undergraduate course, Discover New York.  His research interests include research ethics, competitive intelligence and the cognitive and ethical development of college students.

In January 2005 he was invited by the dean of the University of Culture in Hanoi, Vietnam, to give a two-week workshop on building digital libraries to university faculty and area librarians.  He will return to the University of Culture in January 2008 to present a week-long workshop on building a 21st century global library. 

He initiated numerous student-centered services during his tenure at St. John’s, including enhancing electronic communication for graduate students, supervising the university-wide annual New Fellows and Assistants Orientation, overseeing the recruitment and publicity for the school, coordinating and advising students for the selective combined degree programs, and was elected for seven continuous years as secretary to the Graduate Council.   He also served on the University’s Institutional Review Board and was the recipient of an academic service grant. 

He currently serves on the Teachers College, Columbia University Alumni Council, where he is the chair of the TC Fund Committee and is a member of the American Library Association’s International Relations Round Table Poster Session Committee. Dr. McGuire serves as judge for the Rohm and Haas Annual Invitational Science Fair on Long Island and served as a member for the Middle States accreditation team for Scanlan High School. 

Currently, he holds membership in the following professional organizations: American Library Association, the American Society for Information Science and Technology, the Nassau Library Association, the New York State Library Association, the Association for Fundraising Professionals, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and was elected, from 1996 to 1999, to the board of directors of the National Academic Advising Association where he served as chair of the Graduate Student Commission.

In 2005 he was tapped as Honorary Skull in the St. John’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences prestigious Skull and Circle Honor Society at St. John’s.

Dr. McGuire earned his B.A. in English at St. John’s, his master’s from Fordham University, and holds his doctorate in higher education administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.  He was selected to participate in Harvard University’s Management Development Program and studied library science at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.
