C.W. Post School of Education Professor
Nuzhat Amin Passes Away at Age 60

Dr. Nuzhat Amin, assistant professor in the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, died May 21, 2007 from complications associated with breast cancer. She was 60 years old.

Dr. Amin came to C.W. Post Campus in 2003 where she joined the School of Education as an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction’s TESOL/Bilingual Program.  She taught extensively on education and cultural diversity issues, including sociolinguistics, gender and language, and language and exclusion in the United States, Canada and Pakistan.

Dr. Amin earned her bachelor of education, master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Toronto. She recently co-authored a book titled, Power, Knowledge and Anti-Racism Education: The Poetics of Anti-Racism, a compelling work that examines linguistic racism and the centrality of language in the discourse of anti-racism.  The book also challenges readers to engage in a powerful journey of real and meaningful change through the poetics of words and action which ultimately give voice to the limitless possibilities of change. During her career, she also conducted several research projects including one that examined the discourse on Islam in TESOL and how Muslim and non-Muslim ESL teachers negotiate these discourses.

“We are extremely saddened by the loss of this much beloved professor,” said Robert Manheimer, dean of the School of Education. “She cared deeply about her students and was well respected by them and her fellow colleagues.”

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 1 p.m. in the Interfaith Center on the C.W. Post Campus.
