Emelie Bergendorff, Stand-out Athlete with 4.0 G.P.A., to Address
Southampton College Class of 2006
Brookville, N.Y. – Emelie Bergendorff came all the way from Stockholm, Sweden, to study and play soccer at Southampton College of Long Island Universtiy. She excelled at both, helping the Lady Colonials to the only undefeated regular season in Southampton women’s soccer history and maintaining a grade point average of 4.0.
Bergendorff, a business administration major, will address the Southampton College at C.W. Post Class of 2006 on Commencement Day, Sunday May 14, 2006. The Southampton College ceremony, which will be held in the Interfaith Center, follows the main commencement ceremony on the C.W. Post Campus.
One of several international students recruited for the Southampton College soccer team, Bergendorff spoke English upon arriving at Southampton in 2002 but struggled at first with academic terminology. Nonetheless, she got straight As that first semester – and every semester since.
“My goal has always been to do the best possible in everything I encounter,” Bergendorff said. “I did well in high school in Sweden, and once I realized that a 4.0 GPA was possible in college, that became a goal as well.”
In addition to studying and playing sports, Bergendorff completed internships at a Long Island biometric research and development firm and at Morgan Stanley in Garden City. In the fall of 2004, she took part in SEAmester, spending nine weeks as a member of the crew of a schooner and visiting ports of call along the east Coast of the U.S. and in the Caribbean. “That was probably one of the best experiences of my life,” she said.
When Southampton College’s undergraduate academic programs were transferred to the C.W. Post Campus in September 2005, Bergendorff made the transition to complete her Southampton degree at C.W. Post. She enjoyed the C.W. Post Campus and its proximity to New York City.
Bergendorff will be one of more than 2,300 students who will graduate on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14, 2006 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University’s 48th commencement exercises. This year, C.W. Post’s commencement ceremonies also include graduates from Southampton College and the Southampton Graduate Campus of Long Island University.
