Ching Chen Juhl Named Director of Orchestral Studies at C.W. Post
Accomplished musician and noted educator Ching Chen Juhl is the new director of orchestral studies at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York.
A native of Shanghai and a graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Juhl came to the United States in 1985 on a full scholarship to study viola performance and conducting. She earned a Master of Music from Indiana University and has taught orchestra, strings, chamber music and music theory at Indiana University, Essex Conservatory, Bloomingdale School of Music, Hang Zhou International Music Festival, Jiao Tong University and New York public schools. She is also trained as a Suzuki violin teacher.
"I am honored to join the faculty of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and looking forward to the creative challenges of my new role," said Juhl. "The University has such a great reputation in music."
A Silver Prize winner at the Giuranna International Viola Competition, Juhl has appeared as a viola soloist with orchestras in the United States and China. She has performed and produced orchestral, chamber and solo music concerts throughout North and South America, Europe, Hong Kong and China. As a symphonic musician, she performed with the Phoenix Symphony for seven years and with other orchestras including the Pittsburgh, Columbus and American Symphonies, and the Shanghai Radio Philharmonic and China National Symphony Orchestra. Juhl has also expanded her repertoire by backing up Rod Stewart, touring with Perry Como, and performing in the Broadway touring production of My Fair Lady with Richard Chamberlain.
Juhl directs the Juhl Artists International, an arts management firm, and is the founder and producer of the Chamber Music Club, a salon-like mixture of chamber music and comedy in New York City. She has performed with and managed the Jade String Trio since 1999 and resides in Manhattan with her husband and their son.
The C.W. Post Orchestra is comprised of approximately 70 undergraduate and graduate students. Each semester includes a series of orchestral reading sessions and orchestral master classes with C.W. Post music faculty and visiting guest artists. For the past seven years, the orchestra has participated in an Educational Residency with the New York Philharmonic at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The C.W. Post Orchestra sponsors an annual Concerto Competition open to all currently enrolled C.W. Post students.
