Information Studies

Brookville, N.Y. - Holding a Ph.D. can vastly increase one’s
career options and earning potential. But for many professionals,
the biggest obstacle to earning a doctorate is finding the time
for classes.
At the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, working adults
can earn a Ph.D. in Information Studies while working full-time.
The College of Information and Computer Science at C.W. Post offers
courses for the Ph.D. primarily in the evenings and on weekends
to fit into a busy lifestyle. Through these convenient courses,
students acquire knowledge and conduct research in today’s
critical areas of information organization, retrieval, management
and policy.
Taught by faculty of the College’s prestigious Palmer School
of Library and Information Science, the doctorate in Information
Studies – the only one of its kind in the New York metropolitan
area – prepares individuals to assume leadership positions
in research, teaching and in practice. Graduates of the program
will be equipped to fill a documented need for researchers and faculty
members in the broad field of information studies.
The Palmer School will hold an open house for all prospective Ph.D.
students on Saturday, December 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Room 330 of
the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library at C.W. Post. Faculty and
advisers will be on hand to explain degree requirements and course
schedules. The event is free and open to the public.
The Ph.D. in Information Studies utilizes a strong interdisciplinary
approach because solutions to the problems of organizing, storing
and retrieving vast amounts of information require the combined
knowledge of computer scientists, management specialists, educators,
psychologists, librarians and others. This program offers three
main areas of study - knowledge organization and access, information
studies and services, and human-computer interaction - and is structured
to accommodate part-time students who are already working in the
information field or in related professions.
The Palmer School encourages applications from minority groups
and is committed to equal-opportunity acceptance of candidates into
the program in order to offset the shortage of minorities in the
information professions. Applicants must hold a master's degree
in any discipline. The Palmer School of Library and Information
Science is a division of C.W. Post’s College of Information
and Computer Science.
The C.W. Post Campus is located at 720 Northern Blvd. (Route 25A),
Brookville, NY. For additional information contact Dr. Charles Hildreth,
