New $6.5 Million Academic Center Features Classrooms and Film Studios
October 3, 3005 – Brookville, N.Y. – The Pasty and Al Kahn Discovery Center, a new academic center at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, featuring wireless Internet-ready classrooms and state-of-the-art film studios, will be dedicated on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005.
A champagne reception and ribbon cutting will be held at 6:45 p.m. followed by an 8 p.m. performance by tap legend Savion Glover at C.W. Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.
Named for C.W. Post alumnus Alfred R. Kahn, and his wife Patsy -- who together contributed $1.1 million toward the cost of construction -- the Patsy and Al Kahn Discovery Centeris the most significant addition of classroom space to the Campus in many years, Provost Joseph Shenker said.
“This handsome and fully modern classroom building greatly enhances the educational experience at the C.W. Post Campus,” Dr. Shenker said. “Thanks in large part to Al Kahn’s generosity, approximately 2,000 students make use of this important new facility each day.”
The Patsy and Al Kahn Discovery Centerwas built inside the shell of the Campus’ original gymnasium building, which had been largely unused since the opening of the Pratt Recreation Center on campus in April 2002.
Kahn, who earned a bachelor of science degree in business management from C.W. Post in 1984, is chairman and CEO of 4Kids Entertainment, Inc., previously known as Leisure Concepts, Inc., which markets highly popular toys, games and children’s television shows, including Pokémon, Cabbage Patch Kids and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Kahn also serves as a member of the Long Island University Board of Trustees.
