August 8, 2005 - Two new enterprising programs at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University will enable business and finance students to transport themselves to the trading floor without ever leaving Campus. Starting in September, C.W. Post College of Management students will have the chance to gain financial expertise and build their resumes by earning a coveted Bloomberg Certificate as well as participate in an innovative Investment Club that mimics real-time market fluctuations. Both of these exceptional opportunities are housed at the Financial Markets Center in the College of Management Learning Center, which is part of a million-dollar student financial learning hub.
The Financial Markets Center simulates the dynamic, high-tech work environment that one might find at any major investment house and is fully equipped with computers, live financial market feeds and a “wall board” containing snapshots of domestic and foreign markets.
Students will gain an advantage over the competition through the Bloomberg Certificate Program. The on-campus program is led by Bloomberg professionals via the Internet who will guide students in structured sessions to help them learn the ins and outs of the Bloomberg monitoring system. In phase two, students will have the ability to go beyond the basics by learning how to track the Equity, Fixed Income and Foreign Exchange markets. Each student who successfully completes the program will be awarded a certificate of recognition and a personal profile notation in the Bloomberg system. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Additionally, students can gain real-world experience through the College of Management’s highly-selective, achievement-based Investment Club, where students will act as portfolio managers and junior and senior analysts. Under the guidance of market microstructure and efficiency specialist, Dr. Howard Nemiroff, the club uses mock funds to construct and manage a virtual portfolio. This mock portfolio will be created and managed by club participants, each assuming different roles (portfolio manager, senior analyst, junior analyst) based on interest and expertise.
“The Investment Club is an excellent way for our students to interact with the market place,” said Dr. Nemiroff. “At other schools, professors manipulate trading conditions to induce student responses. At C.W. Post, we place students in the driver’s seat when responding to real-time market fluctuations – something they will have to do when they eventually manage real portfolios absent the safety net of the classroom environment.”
The C.W. Post College of Management Business Program is accredited by the prestigious AACSB International – the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with majors in finance, international business, marketing, management and management information systems. The college also offers an acclaimed 36-to-48 credit Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree; a one-year Accelerated International M.B.A.; and a dual J.D./M.B.A. degree offered in conjunction with Touro Law Center. The College of Management is also home to the School of Professional Accountancy and the School of Public Service. For more information call 516-299-3017.
