New Higher Education Program Starts
September 2004
College graduates with a masters
degree who want to prepare for a leadership position in college
or university administration can now undertake formal study
designed to help them reach their goal. The C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University in Brookville announced that it will
offer post-graduate studies in higher education through its
School of Educations Department of Educational Leadership
and Administration.
"The Higher Education
Program prepares aspiring administrators for leadership roles
in public and private higher education settings such as community
colleges, four-year institutions and specialized institutes,"
explains Program Director R.H. Red Owl. "Our students will
graduate with the credentials for upper-level management positions
that may include directors, deans, vice presidents and chief
financial officers, provosts, chief executive officers, and
possibly event a president."
This one-of-a-kind program is designed
for those who currently hold a managerial position at a college
or university, professionals and executives who are interested
in a career change into higher education or recent masters
graduates seeking to begin meaningful careers at a college or
university.
Saturday and Summer Classes
Students may choose from a 15-credit
Advanced Certificate or 24-credit Advanced Diploma, which includes
supervised field experience. Since students in the Higher Education
Program will typically be working professionals, all classes
are scheduled for Saturday mornings, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m., as well as in a one-week format in summer. Cohorts of
15 to 20 students will move through the program together, creating
a collegial environment and enjoying the benefits of collaborative
learning and networking, according to Dr. Red Owl.
Upon completion of the Higher Education
Program, students will have the qualifications needed either
to advance in higher education administration or to shift careers
into that field. Specifically, they will equipped to seek positions
in such areas as: executive leadership; academic leadership;
fiscal affairs, financial management, and controller; college
and university planning; institutional research; development,
fundraising and grant writing; alumni affairs; college or university
relations; enrollment services; student affairs; student financial
assistance; housing and residence life; student activities;
athletics and recreation; career services and placement; public
safety; and facilities management.
Course topics will include the
history and culture of higher education, leadership, organizational
development, legal affairs and higher education policy, budgeting,
fundraising/development, grants management, planning and evaluation,
and more. Case studies, field experience and research are pivotal
parts of the program and address such critical issues as faculty
tenure, academic freedom, accreditation and regulation, continuous
quality improvement, accountability and data-driven decision-making.
Understanding the responsibilities and relationships of administration
officials with one another and with students will be a key goal.
Taught By Experts in the Field
Program participants will be taught
both by full-time faculty from the Department of Educational
Leadership and Administration and by practicing senior scholar-administrators
who are currently active in higher education. Current and former
college and university presidents, vice presidents and deans
will teach courses or serve as guest lecturers.
