The Pioneer, the student newspaper of the C.W. Post Campus of Long
Island University, has won three Newsday School Journalism Awards
for work submitted in the Spring and Fall 2003 semesters.
The awards were for the following: First Place: News Writing went
to "Flames and Smoke in Queens" by Tewksbury, Massachusetts
resident Matt Burke, former editor-in-chief. Second Place: Local
News/History went to: "Professors Leave Classrooms for Picket
Lines," by Bayside, Queens resident Kimberly Schorr, former
managing editor; Second Place: Commentary went to "Helping
Us?" also by Burke.
"These awards are quite an accomplishment for the newspaper,"
said Burke. "Working on a college paper is a great learning
experience."
The Pioneer staff is made up of students who take on full credit
loads and often work outside of school. The paper is put out weekly
during semesters.
Newsday holds its annual School Journalism Awards to honor college,

held April 21, 2004 at Newsday's Melville headquarters.
"This was a real group effort," said Betty Kane, the
Pioneer's Spring 2004 editor-in-chief. We have a very dedicated
staff and everyone has worked so hard. Its nice to see that
work recognized."
